Saint Petersburg

by bugulma

Saint Petersburg is the most European-spirit Russian city in my opinion. It was built as the city that Peter I the Great showed to European partners as the best practice in Russia. Maybe my opinion is related with the position of the city (near of state borders) or maybe that the city has the best well-thought-out city plan in architecture in Russia. In any way, when I visit the city I feel that I crossed the border and I am in Europe somewhere. I can add that almost every person who visited both Moscow and Saint Petersburg agree with me, at least in the impression that these cities are absolutely different ones.In any way, Saint Petersburg has a lot of interesting architecture and maybe more gorgeous and impressive that is related that XVIII-XIX centuries were the boom for the palace buildings :-) and of course the capital needed it. Besides the cultural life is the same intensive one...

Moscow

by bugulma

Moscow is the biggest city of Russia, its capital and one of the centers of cultural life full of interesting architecture and historical facts. Moscow played the great role in forming of Russian Kingdom in XV century, joining many Russian areas around that to organize the strong and powerful country. The city was the capital till 1704 when Peter I the Great moved the capital to Saint Petersburg and Moscow stayed in the shadow of the northern city till 1918 when the new Soviet state moved the capital back to Moscow. I think many persons of the last generations say that the main Russian symbol is Red Square and Kremlin in Moscow, so the city is symbolized all country in general. As I’ve said the city has many historical places, interesting architecture and sculptures, a lot of theatres and museums as well as many small and big green area and parks. Many people say that the city is...

Mirozhsky Monastery

by jorgejuansanchez

Pskov is a lovely historical town near the border with Estonia. I made a full day stop during my train journey from Novgorod to Tallinn and visited, apart from the beautiful Kremlin and the cathedral, this interesting monastery with its XII frescoes, which is under the list of Patrimonies of the Humankind by the UNESCO.The main wonders of Mirozhsky Monastery are the well preserved frescoes painted by Greek artists.(If you are interested in icons and frescoes art, I strongly recommend you to see Andrei Tarkovski film “Andrei Rublev”).

Dissident Andrei Sakharov Museum

by jorgejuansanchez

This is an apartment that has become a place of pilgrimage for the pacifist people. You can get there though the central boulevard. The nuclear physician Andrei Sakharov was confined in this town, Nizhniy Novgorod (called Gorki in Soviet Union times because Maxim Gorki was born there) from 1980 to 1986, until Gorbachov liberated him from his confinement.Once in Nizhniy Novgorod (not to be confused with the marvellous and historical Novgorod, dating from the V century, between Moscow and Saint Petersburg), do not miss the interesting kremlin, dating from the XIII century.Sakharov apartment is in the downtown, just follow the pedestrian street and ask in the pedestrian street Bolshaia Pokrovskaia; everybody knows where Sakharov lived. There is even a foundation bearing his name in Moscow. The building and apartment are nothing spectacular, just a Stalin block, but the fact to arrive there...

Typical Buryat Village, Bratsk

by jorgejuansanchez

Bratsk is a relatively new town in Siberia, located 450 kilometres north of Irkutsk, that owns its existence to the famous Dam, the fourth greatest in the world. The best of this town is its people, all originating from different parts of Russia and ex Soviet Union countries (Armenia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, etc.) that live there attracted by the high salaries.Apart from visiting the barrage of the hydroelectric station, the best tourist attraction is the Siberian Village, not far from the town, where you will experience the way of life of the Buryat people (Bratsk means place of life of the Buryats), their houses and traditions.

White Kremlin, Kazan

by jorgejuansanchez

Kazan is a wonderful and exotic town, capital of Tatarstan. You can get there by boat through the river Volga, from Nizni Novgorod, for instance (that is the way I reached Kazan).Apart from two historical mosques and the University where Lev Tolstoy and Lenin studied, you should visit one of the loveliest kremlins in the whole Russia, all of white colour dominating the river Volga, which oldest part dates from the XV century.

Khabarovsk Regional Lore Museum

by jorgejuansanchez

The complete name is: N. I. Grodekov Khabarovsk Regional Lore MuseumThis is one of the best museums in Russia. The part devoted to fauna is my favourite (see web page).Have you seen the film Dersu Uzala of Akira Kurosawa based in Vladimir Arsenyev book? It a good film about the encounter in Siberia of a Russian explorer and an aboriginal tribesman that became friends.

Transcaucasia Water Palace

by jorgejuansanchez

In Yessentuki downtown you will notice a building of one floor, looking like a palace, and many people going inside without interruption with a cup in their hands. I followed them, bought a plastic cup for 50 kopecks and entered the building. I saw many fountains and taps from where people served themselves different kind of waters, and immediately sat to drink them, usually in groups or with the family with children, including breastfeed babies. After drinking one glass they went again to the fountains to taste different spring waters. There were medicinal waters, with minerals suitable for the good health of the organism.Everything was for free, except the plastic cup.I combined my visit to Yessentuki with Pyatigorsk and Kislovodsk, in Stravopol, Transcaucasia. That area is very remote, in the border with Karachay Cherkessia and Kabardino Balkaria, near Georgia. You will see in the...

Limnological museum, Listvyanka

by jorgejuansanchez

This is an odd museum where you will see fantastic fishes in flasks taken in the Baikal Lake, the deepest in the world (1637 metres depth). You will be introduced with the Baikal history, fauna and flora, and will be able to watch a film by Jacques-Yves Cousteau. The views over the lake up the hill are extraordinary. There is a restaurant up there where you can have lunch before returning to Irkutsk. Try omul fish, unique in the world, a kind of endemic salmon fished in the Baikal Lake. It is delicious and not expensive. You can get to the pleasant fishing village Listvyanka from Irkutsk by ferry along the Angara River (70 kilometres).
