Moscow

by darthmilmo

Despite being one of the most expensive cities in the world, Moscow doesn’t loose the charm and should be included in any Russian itinerary. There are still bargains to be had for the budget traveler. There is McDonalds for lunch/dinner, several local restaurants offering business lunch, and even Turkish Kebabs as a cheap dinner. Cheap easy ways to kill time include walks through the several lovely streets, plazas, churches, and parks. I highly recommend strolling down the Ulitza (street) Arbat, which is a pedestrian street filled with stores, cafes, souvenir stalls, performers, artists, musicians, and more. The heart of Moscow and Russia is the mighty Red Square and the infamous Kremlin. Our first stop was at the renowned St. Basil Cathedral. Just think of the one church that brings Russia to mind. That church is St. Basil. The exterior is known for its towering fairy tale looking...

Vitoslavlitsy Museum of Wooden Architecture

by darthmilmo

The next day, we took a daytrip out of Novgorod to visit the interesting Vitoslavlitsy Museum of Wooden Architecture. In it were about a dozen wooden building, mostly churches. They were all built around the region and were later brought to this interesting museum. The walk around the premises takes an hour at most, but getting there takes a while by bus. Inside the premises you may be lucky enough to see someone doing some local craftworks.

Novgorod

by darthmilmo

After St. Pete, we headed to the lovely small city of Novgorod. If anything, Novgorod reminds you were the Russians came from. They are descendants of early Varangian Norseman who settled in this region, especially around Novgorod. Even today, the city shows off its Viking and Scandinavian roots on its architecture, monuments, and more. Anabela and I started things off by visiting the old Church of Our-Savior-at-Ilino. This church, which is barely standing, has the only surviving frescos of the famous Byzantine painter Theophanes the Greek. These are true works of art. It's a pity the Nazis did so much damage inside. His artworks depict real emotion in the icon painted frescos. The emotions of the paintings are particularly noted by white shadows near the eyes, a rarity in this type of dull religious art. We then walked towards the Volkov River. About a block from it, you came across...

St. Petersburg

by darthmilmo

Located on a strategic point along the Neva River, St. Petersburg grew from a small settlement into Russia’s most Western European looking cities. This city grew on me after a few days. At first the roads seem to be all dirty, perhaps from the last snowfall; and the buildings where all dilapidated and falling apart. But after a few days of exploration, I discovered the true heart and charm of St. Petersburg. There are far too many things to see in St. Pete. Some of this is plain old tourist traps, but others are beautiful jewels. One of the highlights of this city may very well be walking along its busy roads, especially those along the channels. The heart of the tourist district is the infamous Nevsky Prospect, which is an avenue that stretches for nearly 4 kilometers. Here is where you will see the trendy shops, the western restaurants and more. It's also a nice place to start a tour...

Old Cities

by nepalgoods

In the European part of Russia there are a lot of beautiful and old cities like for example Jaroslavl. The golden domes of their churches and the architecture of their old wooden houses reminds us of long gone golden times.

Sergiev Posad

by aliante1981

Sergiev Posad is one of the Golden Ring towns and is the major religious centre in Russia. Itýs easy to get to ý just an hour away from Moscow, and thus makes a convenient day (or half-day) trip. The star attraction is the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, a monastery founded by St. Sergij Radonezhskij ý the most revered Russian saint. For those who are not very interested in religion, the place offers fine architecture, interesting museums, tombs of several famous figures (like the Godunov family) and an insight into the history of the Russian state and art.I have already made some tips on my Sergiev Posad pge, though this page is still a fair way from what I would like it to be.Here I will add just another brief note: when you go, it is just well to remember that loads of people come there to pray, and this has to be respected, though I somewhat grumbled myself when I could not get in somewhere...

Within the Kremlin

by Sharrie

Now move on to the Kremlin. I'll write more about Kremlin after this. In the mean time, proceed to CATHEDRAL OF THE ANNUNCIATION.The only cathedral in the Kremlin designed & created by the Russians. The rest of them (& there are many, you'll soon find out) were designed mostly by Italians!Commissioned by Ivan III in 1484. (If you can get your facts straight on which Ivan they are, I salute u ;-))This is his royal chapel. Next to it is Ivan's palace - the Faceted Palace. What's important & interesting is its interior. The entire cathedral was painted with frescoes!Icon painting is truly an art in Russia!Somewhat similar to those from Greece!Well, they looked similar to me :-pRemember to check out the iconostasis (which symbolizes the boundary between the spiritual & temporal worlds). This one is considered the finest in Russia!Painted by Theophanes the Greek, Andrey Rublev & Prokhor...

The future leaders of Russia...

by Sharrie

Like most countries, it's natural to assume the future leaders will probably be one of the many outstanding students in the University. I said natural, not rightly ;-)In this case, the Moscow State University. No, we are not here to visit the future leader. Rather this is where Sparrow Hills is. Again, newly wed couples come here to take photos often. It offers a panoramic view of the city of Moscow. To me, of interest is the architecture of the Moscow State University. It's known to be Stalinist-Gothic style. Commissioned by Stalin & completed in 1953. 36 storeys! Wow, one of the tallest universities I've ever encountered!

& ... this is Moscow!

by Sharrie

Unbelievable how clean this station is, isn't it?One of the newest in Moscow. Just opened I heard. Regardless, it's ultra modern & didn't quite fit with my idea of Russia. Ok, guilty as charged ;->That's what traveling does to you.Wipes out all the silly thoughts/& preconceptions in your head. Those inconsistency & those "arrogance".I admit, sometimes the unknown sucks. But in this case, Russia is still a superpower!!!Remember this, reading an entire guide book doesn't give you an accurate idea of a place. Instead, half a day trip makes everything comes alive!& I'm speaking to myself :-p
