We were having a walking tour of Tomsk on 7 July, when our guide noticed a group of youths carrying buckets. 'Oh,' she exclaimed - 'it's 7 July - I completely forgot. On 7 July people in Tomsk throw water at each other.'
Now, she may have been winding us up, but for the rest of that day we certainly saw several groups of youths throwing water at each other (and at passing buses), and this did not happen the day before or the day after. So if you happen to be in Tomsk on 7 July, take care. Or take an umbrella.

I'm always pleased if I see some wildlife around, even if it's domesticated. Here in Tomsk I was amazed at this obviously very hungry dog who overcame the climb into the rubbish bin. Also I was amused by the couple of cats which hang around the bird houses.
