Fly to

by Gili_S

As Russia is the biggest country in the world so flying is sometimes the only way to get to some remote places. However all major airlines flying to Russia so you can use it if you can afford it. There are also some budget airlines flying to Russia and sometimes you can get really good deals.

A car

by Gili_S

A car is very useful to use in Russia as most of the time public transport is slow and crowded, but only a local registered car, a foreign registered car might attract burglars and thieves (as anywhere else in Eastern Europe.) Having a local driver familiar with the roads is a bonus as road signs are not marked that well :)

Russian railway

by ealgisi

Russian people are mostly used to travel by train, and it doesn't surprise me since the train system in Russia is well developed, comfortable and for sure less expensive than taking an airplane. For people who are interested in experiencing Russian culture, a trip using the train is a must !This website (http://www.poezda.net/en/index) offers an English version of timetables, this will tell you where you can purchase the ticket (departure station), but the online purchase is only in Russian. Here's another site for timetables: http://www.waytorussia.net/Services/TrainTickets.htmlHere are some different prices compared with airlines: http://www.sras.org/guides_russian_travel_budgetDiufferent kind of tickets:Kupe tickets: (compartment) will allow you to have a bed in a closed compartment, compartment to be shared with other 3 people.Platzkart: (economy class) will allow you a bed in an open...

Visas

by John195123

Depending on where you're from, you may need an invitation. Be careful where you stay- not all places will register you, and even your inviting agency may not help you out. Visas can cost more than $200... especially with the Letter of Invitation and all that. Most hotels, as people have mentioned, will register your visa, but be careful around the St. Petersburg train station as that seems to be a favorite haunt of police looking to give tourists trouble.Try visatorussia.com or waytorussia.com for Letters of Invitation (LOI). You'll need to tell them where you plan to go (doesn't have to be exact), planned entry and exit points, and you have to fill out an application for the visa- if you've been in the military or police, be honest about that- I don't know if it means they won't let you in, but better to be honest, in many ways.Visa stuff is difficult and confused, but we were in...

Russian trains

by GyuriFT

This almost calls for international tickets. The Russian train tickets is a separate dissertation to write about, but unless you are looking for place similar to Canadian "Section Sleeper" or Indian "Sleeper Class" (in Russia: "Platskartny"), the rule of the tumb is, tickets bought outside of Russia in Slovakia or Czech Republic are ALWAYS cheaper than domestic ones.Domestically bought Russian tickets for domestic destinations (also including most CIS countries) are very difficult to calculate because there is:- base fare depending on the distance- price of the seat or bed accommodation- surcharge for train quality/speed/service quality- season-depending multiplication factor (some kind of rudimentary yield management)- service charge- additional (heavily overprized) charge for food service if other contingent (no food) is gone. That will result a surprisingly expensive fare on...

Trains Between Moscow and St Petersburg

by JWofford

My son and I took the overnight Grand Express from Moscow to St. Petersburg last month (late May, 08). It is clearly the nicest train for that route, but I can think of a bunch of other ways to spend your money. We had the second or third largest category of room (2 berths) and it was very comfortable, with plenty of storage space and a nice flat-screen tv. It leaves around midnight and is filled with businessmen, going back and forth to the former capital. They arrive early, with food, order alcohol and chill with their collegues. I don't usually have to be concerned with female security issues anymore (separated), but it seemed very safe to me. I thought for the high price (around $500), there would be a dining car, but there was just some average packaged food, which was fairly forgettable (I'd say it cost the railway maybe $6.00 US, tops), some slippers and towels. The room was very...

Travelling by car

by eksvist

If somebody decide to trip to Russia with own car, then my suggestion today is - forget it.In 2006 was my last trip to Saint Petersburg, and then the roads, going from Estonia (Narva) to Russia (Saint Petersburg) were the worst what I've seen the long time. When I think earlier, that we have the bad roads, then after my trip I don' think so ;) My suggestion is - if it possible, use the bus, train or plane. There is very bad traffic-culture on the streets of the city (look the photos), and traffic accidents are often ...Apart from the bad roads, there is Militsiya (Russian police), who love the bribe. When you have a little better car, I mean if you look like you have the "free money", then you "must" to share it with them ... and it is not exception ...When you however choose to ride by car, you see of course the wonderful wild land with old, dilapidated houses. There is the cheap fuel.

Tains in Russia

by whiteritter

Yes,my friend, usually train tickets are cheap but full comfort you can get only with "named train" or in Russian"firmenny poezd"(you are right!) and if you will use a sleepping car.Fares for 2-bed compartment sleepping cars in Russia now almost the same like air tickets.About start from Slovakia to Magnitogorsk or any other far destinations by train. The story is always the same:You can get Russian capital from any European capital by train, but if you'll go further to the East,North or South, you'll need get another train.
