Alexandrov Architectural Background
Favorite thing: Architectural ensemble of the Tsar Yard of Alexandrova (or Alexandrov’s or Alexandrovskaya) Sloboda is the unique medieval palace complex. It was created by Italian and Moscow architects in the XVI-XVII centures. The ensemble was the second one after the Kremlin of Moscow in terms of size, beauty and richness.
A spirit of that century, epoch of autocracy establishment and strengthening of Russian power, was reflected in architecture of tsar fortress. Up to the present moment the fortress kept its design of front part and main constructions of "Royal castle".
As well as in old times the Kremlin of Alexandrov surprises tourists by its splendor and mystery. Bright colors of the history of Russian statehood return to life in ancient monuments, stone, paintings, bell sounds.

Alexandrov Historical Background
Favorite thing: The town was first mentioned in a deed by Ivan Kalita in the XIVth century as Alexandrov settlement. The origin of its name is still unknown. The town of Alexandrov is famous because it served as the capital of Russia for three months (from December 1564 till February 1565) under Tsar Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV Grozny) . In 1564-1581 the residence of Ivan the Terrible was here.
The town became a political, economical and cultural center of the Russian State. One of the dramatic events of that epoch happened in the settlement: Ivan the Terrible killed his heir Tsarevitch Ivan.
Ivan the Terrible agreed to return his court and the relics of Moscow which he had taken with him. Ivan agreed to return after the church gave him permission to found the Oprichnina.
The daughter of Peter I Elizabeth, who was exiled to her patrimonial estate in 1730, had been living here for 10 years and went for the ceremony of crowning from this place.

Modern Alexandrov Background
Favorite thing: Alexandrov is famous as the town where the first Russian TV-set (KVN-49) was produced. Now it is a town of high technology industries & an important tourist center with many sightseeing.
The town of Alexandrov with its unique monuments is a part of the Golden Ring of Russia.
First of all it’s the Alexandrovskaya Sloboda which is certainly worth a visit whenever you come here. But besides it there are a lot of other sights and an atmosphere of a Russian provincial town you will find here.

Favorite thing: Alexandrov as some other cities in the Moscow vicinity has still retained its old spirit by the way of preserving the old wooden houses which were typical for 18-19 cc. Aren't they nice?
Some streets in the town are just full of them, but you have to fish for such a sight. Modern times pay their toll on the past by devastating what seems uncomfortable and unsutable....
Favorite thing: This one is another museum exhibit.... ancient clock. Don't know how they worked but there were no hands; have a close look as well - there are more than 12 hours and besides there are letters as well...
oh... won't want to be asked "What's the time?" in the XVII C......
Favorite thing: This is one of the toweres in the wall surrounding Sloboda with the Trumpeting Angel on the very top. This decoration is very common to a number of convents and monasteries.... the Angel trumpets about Kindom coming and at the same time serves as weather vane.
The close past
Favorite thing: This door is inside Pokrovskaya Church as well... this is the original one. Being so real it seemed to me that it could work like a time machine.... just open the door..... and voila! you're back in the XVII century....
(and Ivan the Terrible is gently putting his hand on your shoulder......)
The seat for the greatest
Favorite thing: This exhibit you can find in the museum which is inside Pokrovskaya Church.
It is the throne of Ivan the Terrible, which was carved out from mammoth tusk (don't know whether it's right to call it ivory), as was told to me by the local keeper. Unfortunately what you can see is not the original but the true copy.
Favorite thing: Pokrovskaya church is another hip-roof construction on the territory....
Formerly it served as a home church and the place where diplomatic missions were accepted, as well as living accomodation reserved for Tsar.
Nowadays, you will find museum inside, with different historic exhibits.
One can find there as well what was left from original frescos, which are unique judging by origination period.
Favorite thing: This is actually the painting of Trinity which was made over the main entrance to the church with the same name.
Well, nothing special, indeed, but I took the picture mostly because of the feeling I had at that moment.... light, purity, vicinity of divine.... oh, well, Sloboda itself is divine place....
Favorite thing: While Raspyatskaya church is the soul of Sloboda, the Trinity Cathedral is its heart.... Very Russian looking, was build in accordance with Russian Classicism.
Unfortunately, while we were there, it was closed, officially it's opened to the public during the services, that is early in the morning and at 5pm, but my guess is that if you go with excursion, nuns will open the Cathedral for visiting anyway.
Favorite thing: Raspyatskaya church-bell tower can be seen from far aproaches to Sloboda. It's number 1 hip-roof building in the whole ansamble.Beautiful and elegant construction.
If the weather permits, one can climb the bell tower and see the town spread out ....
Alley of peacefulness.....
Favorite thing: I was charmed by this view..... a winter alley surrounded by trees which lay long blue shadows on wite and sparkling snow..... an old couple sitting and having a chat.... about what?.... tranquility and eternity of being is in the air....
Favorite thing: It served as another home church as well as chambers of Tsarina, it looks small nice and cosy at the same time.
Nowadays there is a museum inside which exhibits religious related displays: a lot of ancient hand written Gospels, some of them are really huge, deserve to be signed in Guiness book really!, old icons, church attires, etc. One can also see an old tiled stove, which warmed the whole building long time ago.... how it managed to do, I wonder now?
