    Alexandrov - Trinity Cathedral
    4 more images

The Trinity Cathedral was built in 1513. The palace church of the Tsar residence is the most grandiose and majestic structure of Alexandrova Sloboda. Important political and social events took place in it - Ivan IV the Terrible married his third wife Anna Sobakina and his fifth wife Anna Vasilchikova. His son Ivan Ivanovitch married Eudokia Saburova. Both outside and inside the Cathedral is decorated by white-stone carvings.

In the interior of the church is the fresco painting of XVI cent. In the church portals are spoils of war of Ivan IV - regular copper gate of Tver (XIV century) and solemn "gilded" Novgorod doors (1336).

The Assumption church was built in the XVI-XVII centuries. It was the home church of the Great Princess. It is a small church of delicate proportions, standing on a high white-stone ground floor, under which there are well preserved vast cellars - safe treasure depositories of the Moscow Princes Vasili III and Ivan IV.

There is a legend which says that in the XVI century these cellars were used as the beginning of a secret underground passageway "Tsar tube". It was possible to leave the Tsar Residence trough the "tube" by three horses gear without obstacles.

    Intercession Church frescos

On the sides of the tent-shaped roof of the Intercession Church there is the unique well preserved fresco painting which was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible himself.

The painting strikes by perfection of fine line, by laconic artistic language, unordinary choice of depicted saints. The first Russian Tsar Ivan IV spent long hours in this church praying and thinking about the fate of his state.

The Intercession church was built in the XVI-XVII centuries. It is the most rare monument of Russian medieval architecture, which was used as the home church of the Tsar Ivan.

The most important architectural feature of this church is its tent-shaped roof which is considered the first roof of such type in Russia (may be it was constructed even early than the famous roof in the Church in Kolomenskoye which is included in the World Heritage List).
