The museum of wooden houses in Suzdal
    4 more images

The museum of wooden houses was built already at Soviet-times and there are several houses, 2 windmills and a large house with a water-wheel, 2 wooden churches and some more buildings that were re-built there, after they had been taken apart in other parts of the country.
The museum looks great already from outside, the wooden church is next to the entrance-gate and you will see most of it already through the fence.

the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin
    4 more images

This church is one of the highlights of any visit to Suzdal, it is the cathedral built inside the area of the former Kremlin of Suzdal.
Finding the right names of the various churches of Suzdal is a lot of trouble, as they mostly make a slightly different sense in the various languages :
Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin and sometimes also Rozhdestvenskiy cathedral are the english expressions
Mariä - Geburts - Kathedrale is it in german and
Sobor Roschdestwa Bogorodizy is the russian name, transfered into our letters.
On my last photograph : The former palace of the archibishop of Suzdal, opposite of the cathedral.

This is the cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin from outside with its 5 onion-domes on top. The first church at this place was built already in the 11th century, but the church that you see there today dates back to the 16th century.
You will be able to get there any time and see the facade of the church and its great domes, there are no gates beeing closed when the church is not open for the public, maybe except that small gate at the end of Kremlowskaja Uliza that you will see in my 2nd photograph, but in that case you simply take another way, as this wall exists only at one side of the church-grounds.
My last 2 pics : Dont miss to take a closer look for the old entrancegate of the cathedral, that is shown inside the church, next to the new entrance-gates of today !

Inside the The museum of wooden houses in Suzdal

Get inside the museum of wooden houses in Suzdal and you will step back into the "good old times" of Russia. Wooden architecture can be seen still in many places in the countryside of Russia but more and more these houses are taken down in order to build new buildings by concrete.
Inside of this museum you will have to pay a "Photo & Video-fee" , in 2008 it was 100 Rubles for ALL sights in Suzdal (also the churches, where photography was allowed).
In case that will go to Vladimir as well you can get a special permit there for 150 Rubles including also the Photo- & Videofee for Suzdal & Vladimir.

    the wooden church

There are 2 wooden churches in the open-airmuseum of wooden buildings and the one on my photograph is the only one where you will be able to step inside in order to see its interior. It is quite simple in comparison to the ornate stone-churches in Russia, but still it looks great and interesting, although all of these exhibits are obviously just cheap replicas, maybe the originals had been taken into museums.

    The wooden church of Glotowo

In 1960 the wooden church of Glotowo, a small village closeby Suzdal was rebuilt inside the area of the old Kremlin of Suzdal, close to the cathedral and nowadays you might get the feeling, it was standing there lots of centuries already.
Unfortunately you cannot enter that church, it was also under reconstruction while I had been there in may 2008.

The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin (Mariä - Geburts - Kathedrale) is worth to pay the photo-fee of 100 Rubles for all sights of Suzdal. The iconostase, dating back to the 16th century is without doubt one of the most beautiful in Suzdal and one of the very view that will be shown at all to the ordinary tourists. There will be guards inside the church, checking your photo-permission and once that you have shown it, nobody cares anymore, wether you use your flash or not.

It is a pity that most of the churches in Suzdal are closed for tourists, many of them might have not yet been restored from the inside like Zerkow Woskressenija Christowa / resurrection-church / Christi-Auferstehungskirche, that was built next to the shopping-arcades and dates back to 1720. (see my pics 1 & 2)
On my pics 3-5 : Kirche des Einzugs Christi in Jerusalem and Paraskewa-Pjatniza-church

inside the museum of old wooden architecture
    4 more images

The giant waterwheel and the 2 windmills are interesting exhibits of the museum of wooden houses. You cannot enter the windmills, but at the water-wheel you will see how it was working with a giant waterwheel , where people had to walk inside in order to get the water out of the well.
At this waterwheel there is a short performance of traditional russian folk-music by 2 musicians from time to time, 2 nice songs by a great female voice, accompanied by the old russian instrument. CDs are sold there as well as donations are welcome !

    great frescos in the cathedral
    4 more images

The frescos of the cathedral were under reconstruction in May 2008 and still they look interesting and you will be able to see the most of them anyway. The sceneries of these frescos follow a general rule of the russian orthodox church, what kind of sceneries and what saints etc. have to be shown in the frescos of any orthodox church. More or less these frescos are telling the stories of the holy bible.

Inside of the palace of the archibishop you will able to see only a large hall with the throne of the archibishop and a large table where obviously the higher officials had their meetings. There are also 2 large ornate tile-ovens in that hall and various icons and other exhibits are on display there. For photography you will need to have the general permit of photography for the city of Suzdal.

    inside Sobor Roschdestwa Bogorodizy
    4 more images

Take a closer look at this ornate chandelier of Sobor Roschdestwa Bogorodizy / Mariä - Geburts - Kathedrale: in the centre of it there are 2 angles standing, one is below in the centre and the other one is standing on top. When you click on my other photographs you will seen them a bit better and on my last photograph you will also see a glass-bowl that has a small-scale-model of a church inside.
b.t.w. nobody cares, when you are using your flash inside that church, as long as you can show your licence of "Photo & Video" and your only way to take a picture of that angle will be by using your flash, otherwise it will be "swallowed" by the bright light of the electrified candles.

    Pokrowskij-Monastery / Mari - Schutz - Kloster
    4 more images

Pokrowskij-Monastery / Pokrowskij Monastyr / Mariä - Schutz - Kloster was built in 1364 and during communiste times the whole monastery was used as an Intourist-hotel. A few years ago the monastery was given back to the Russian Othodox Church and now there are nuns again there, but tourists are still welcome to take a look at the great buildings from outside. All buildings will be closed except for a small museum, but you can walk through the monastery-park and take some photographs, BUT it is forbidden to take pics of the nuns !
