  • The ancient shopping-arcades

Like in many other old cities of Russia all shops had to be inside the old shopping-arcade during the former centuries. That way it was easy to controll the taxes that had to be payed to the city of Suzdal. Nowadays that is a bit different, but mostly the shopping-arcades are restored again and used for shops and other services.

  • local flavor - literally

This place has an elaborate interior in old Russian revival style. Although they have excellent honey blinis, you really go there to drink the mead, which is much better than the bottled stuff they sell on the street. For a few buck they give you a tasting tray of 10 different kinds of mead, some quite spiced.

  • Stallholders Suzdal

When a babushka holds up a tin bucket with sloshing content at a tourist market there must be something interesting in store. Indeed and to my surprise was the refreshing and nutritious peasant food on offer for a few rubles. Cucumbers in brine. Russia is home still to such wholistic delights.

  • Honey Mead

A most unusual establishment found right in the centre of Suzdal was a modest up market tavern which sold various local herbal wines and ales - including a refreshing honey mead. It is a bit of a torist trap where the bar maid can be photographed in traditional folk dress for a fee, but other than this the atmosphere of the place is pleasant and...

Suzdal' Transportation

  • how to get to Suzdal

Unfortunately there is no direct trainline to Suzdal, so an organized bustour seems to be the best solution. I came to Suzdal from Ples, about 100 km north of Suzdal and the drivingtime to Suzdal was about 3 hours one way. That tour was organized by our cruiseship M/S Furmanov on her way from Perm to Moscow. The fullday-tour was 65 euros including...

Suzdal' Warnings and Dangers

  • the "bus station" is an abandonned wreck

They built an elaborate bus station out of town, but it has been abandonned and is a bit of a walk into town. The Yaroslavl bus still drops you off there, though. Tourists who are moving on from Suzdal have been recommended to take a cab to Vladimir, which is 37 km away and has rail and bus connections.

Suzdal' Favorites

  • Riding a sledge

Riding a sledge is the best way to move around Suzdal', especially in winter. The streets here are too calm and 'ancient' for driving a car but in winter often too slippery and hilly for walking. So a sledge is an optimal option for going around. It isn't very cheap (as everything in Suzdal') - about 30-35 US dollars for a half of an hour. But if...
