Kirill-Belozersk Art Museum, Kirillov

call_me_rhia Says:  The Kirill-Belozersk Art Museum is located inside the Kirilo-Belozerskiy monastery (Dormition of Virgin) founded at 1397 by St. Kirill. It’s hosted in a simple white house and has a unique collection of sacred icons. There is also a small collection of folk art of the...

The Monastery towers

The Monastery towers, Kirillov

call_me_rhia Says:  The Monastery is not only surrounded by walls, but by towers, too. They are all different and all have their peculiarities. Some names, just to mention a few, are: Belozerskaja tower, Kazanskaja tower, Ferapontovskaja tower, Glukhaja tower, Kuznechnaja tower. One curiosity:...

The new walls

The new walls, Kirillov

call_me_rhia Says:  The new walls are those that were built 1654-1680 by local bricklayers under control of a local foreman called Kirill Serkov. He added this tower, too, which looks like a church and blends well with the religious buildings of the Monastery. Unlike the previous walls, these...

The fortress walls

The fortress walls, Kirillov

call_me_rhia Says:  The fortress walls are a mighty sight and show the work of many skilled crafsmen. Before 1650 the entire monastery area enclosed by walls on the Siversky Lake bank and buildings of Northern Monk's Cells and Treasure Chambers. Further fortifications were added between 1650...

The wooden church

The wooden church, Kirillov

call_me_rhia Says:  The monastery’s wooden church looks like it doesn’t belong on the ground where it stands, and in fact it doesn’t. It was moved from Borodava village to its present location in 1950, when village was flooded by Sheksna reservoir waters during the industrial reorganization of...

The Church of St. Eupihimius

The Church of St. Eupihimius, Kirillov

call_me_rhia Says:  The Church of St. Eupihimius is a strange looking church, especially fopr its small size topped with a high roof: there are few of such building in Russia to be seen. It was erected in 1646 by Jakov Kostousov and acted as a hospital church. This is one of the first examples...

The Church of St.John Climacus above the Holy Gate

The Church of St.John Climacus above the Holy Gate, Kirillov

call_me_rhia Says:  This church, the Church of St.John Climacus above the Holy Gates, is built above the monastery’s entry gates. The gates were constructed in 1523, while thechurch above it was erected in 1653. While you walk through the gates you’ll notice that they are adorned with fine...

The Cathedral of the Dormition

The Cathedral of the Dormition, Kirillov

call_me_rhia Says:  The Cathedral of the Dormition is the main Cathedral of the monastery, although not the most beautiful one; it’s also the first stone building of the monastery. The cathedral itself is not a free-standing building, as it is attached from the west to the left with the church...

The Church of Transfiguration

The Church of Transfiguration, Kirillov

call_me_rhia Says:  The I admired most – possibly the most scenic building in the Kirill-Belozersk monastery , is the Church of Transfiguration. There’s a gate under the Church, and it’s called the water gate, as it leads down to the shore of lake Siverskoe. The gate has two passages: one for...

Problems to find a hotel, Kirillov

Pablos_new Says:  If you want to stay in Kirillov at tourist season, it is good idea to book rooms in advance. We failed to find any free room though there are more than 5 hotels in the town (wich is unusually many for Russian town of that size, but appeared to be too few for this...

boats docked at goritsy

To get to Kirillov - the way we did it - was by river boat. The boat docked at the nearby town of Goritsy, then there was a bus waiting to take us to Kirillov - only 7 (scenic)kilometres away.

The Convent of the Resurrection

The Convent of the Resurrection is located in nearby Goritsy, a little village a few kilometres from Kirillov. it's in ruin at the moment, but it's nevertheless important.
It was founded in 1544 by Ephrosina, Ivan the Terrible's aunt who was then kept prisoner here. Ivan also exiled 2 of his 7 wives here - so it soon became a place where "undesired" women could be segregated. "Undesired" men, by contrast, were imprisoned in the Kirill-Belozerski monastery in Kirillov.

Location: about 1 kilometre from where river boats dock

Coat of arms of Kirillov

Coat of arms of Kirillov, Kirillov

Pablos_new Says:  The modern coat of arms is base on historic coat of arms approved in 1781: "Upper part is coat of arms of Novgorod. Lower part is a "klepalo" on a tripod, ancient tool which was used instead of bells, and two iron hammers with it. It is put into white field as symbol of...

Kirillov

Kirillov, Kirillov

call_me_rhia Says:  Kirillov is a tiny settlement of little traditional wooden houses which hosts one of the most stunning monasteries that I have ever had the chance to visit, the Kirill-Belozersk Monastery. The Monastery was founded in 1397 on the banks of a little lake and contains, among...
