It's a new monument! What have you thought?New interesting monument to the first Vologda street lamp was recently unveiled near to the Foot-bridge.
It's dedicated to 100th anniversary of electric light in Vologda. A spirit of this monument is a dog peeing on the street-lamp pole. This monument can became one of the main Vologda sights. It stands on the place of one of 35 first street-lamps, which were lighted 21st of May, 1904.
Author of this monument, Elena Nikitina explained about the dog, that it was desired to create a peace of natural historical environment. That was why there appeared this nice ground with wooden fence and a real street light. But all that needed life and so appeared this dog.

...is an annual event which takes place in summer within the walls of the Kremlin. The festival is called "Golosa istorii" ("Voices of History"). The highlight of the festival is a Russian historical drama. Various theatre companies take part in the event. The audience is seated on wooden banks arranged in tiers. The Kremlin builds a magnificent setting to the play, especially when it is flood lit at nicht.
Tip: in the evening there is a vast number of moskitos in the open, so see to it that you have long-sleeved tightly fitted clothes on or use a spray. You'd better buy tickets beforehand.

Stalin spent some time here while in excile. He lived at Ulyanoyov 33, which is now a real estate office. Poke your head in the door, and ask if you can see his old stove.
Apparently he had a son who still lives in town, but I couldn't tell you where he lives now.

Located on the Vologda River, it has some excellent examples of Russian Othodox churches. (you are not going to get a lesson here, because I can't give you one). One thing that is unique is the onion domes are all identicle in shape and size.
The legend goes like this (a distant ancestor of mine) Ivan the Terrible ordered a church to be built for his official visit (which was to be very soon). The locals slapped together one in a hurry. On arrival Ivan the Terrible walked into the church only to have a shingle from the roof fall on his head. He stormed out discusted over the whole affair never to return. Did he ever miss out.

There was virtually nobody there when we visited on a cold November afternoon, but it's interesting enough to have a wander around.
