Vodka

by kris-t

You should be careful around alcohol. If you really aren't up for drinking or going all out, just refuse the drink. Russian use to drink with a lot of snack (zakuska). Vodka won’t affect you this mush if you eat rich meal. But still be careful and never ever try to "over drink" Russians :) - you can quickly get into trouble. And don't ever buy hard alcohol from unknown, dubious or strange looking kiosks, or shady characters. It might not be alcohol at all.Do not mix different types of alcohol even if you see some Russians do that.In case if you do get drunk please avoid going outside on the street - especially at night or alone.

If you are going to buy Icons or any art work in Russia, beware: All items which are of cultural or historical value - icons, antiques, paintings, coins, books (older than 50 years) etc. - may be taken out of Russia only with prior written approval of the Ministry of Culture and payment of 100% duty. You will need to spend some time and money to get this approval.

Russian winter

by kris-t

Last few years Moscow's winters were more as european than as russian but sometimes weather remains you where you are :) This winter (2010-2011) present us some really cold weeks till -32 C (-22F) and icy rains and we got some problems with that - transport, electricity etc. But nature is especially beautiful in winter time... After al winter is a wonderful time for touring Russia. It will give you the opportunity to feel the beauty of Russian winter.And... In winter like that you can easy understand why fur-caps and fur-coats are so popular in Russia. For more pictures - see our Travelogue Russian winterBut as you know Russia has a lot more to offer than snow and ice :)

Visiting Orthodox Churches

by kris-t

How to Behave in an Orthodox Church:Most Russian Orthodox churches have an iconostasis, which separates the nave from the holy altar, which signifies the Heavenly Kingdom. ONLY prists are allowed to go between an iconostasis and altar. Please remember that when you are inside. And another rule: women suppose to have head covered inside the church and men - uncovered, men must take their head-dresses off (this includes hats, bandanas, scarves, etc.). In russian culture dresses women in the church should be modest. No tank tops or dresses with only straps at the shoulders, no short skirts (mini-skirts). When you enter keep silent, don't speak with each other unless it is absolutely necessary. If you speak, do it quietly.Orthodox visitors can place candles in the churches. This practice is actually open to everyone, if you feel like doing this – go ahead. You usually can buy candles inside...

Beware of Travel All Russia travel agency

by baddcat

I booked a trip through Travel All Russia and they fell short on several matters during this trip. I have detailed all of it over and over again with them, but they are dragging their feet, arguing about what are facts, not opinion and generally being horrible to deal with.1. Overall communication about this trip from the agency was terrible and it turned out that my time in Moscow was limited to only 4 hours – this was a change from the original itinerary that was not communicated to me. Had I known of the change, I would have booked a night in Moscow. I paid for a full day tour and was rushed by the tour guide - 4 hours is NOT enough for Moscow. 2. I paid for first class tickets for every leg of the train journey, but did not get it on legs 2 and 3. The 4 day trip to Irkutsk was second class, but with 4 tickets so I had the compartment to myself. That was acceptable, but I want to know...

Ladies & Gents - dont confuse them !

by globetrott

Ladies & Gents - dont confuse them !Please enlarge my picture and take a closer look at the signs that you see there, would you have taken the right entrance ?M does not stand for Men , (but muscheni), but at least it is a way to remember, where to enter for gents, the ladies enter on the right, maybe you better remember that cyrillic letter, because you will not always find the doors so close to each other. In most cases you will have to pay between 5 and 20 rubles to powder your nose in Russia !b.t.w.: Tourguides in Russia call such a toilet-break a "technical stop" ! ;-)

Taking photos inside of buildings

by globetrott

Russians are still quite afraid of picture-taking tourists inside of shopping-malls and other private buildings and many of these places will have their own security-people preventing you from doing this.I had big problems and a very long discussion with a security-guard in this shopping-centre in the centre of Moscow in 2002. And the discussion was in Russian at his side and mostly in English on my side (except that I could say 'no panimaju' in russian - and he finally did not believe, I will not understand what he is saying, if I am able to say 'I don't understand' in russian...)He finally let me go after a few minutes......and now I even put this 'highly confidential picture' into the internet....-------------------------------spys of all countries !please e-mail me , in case you need a better scanning of this extremely interesting picture, so you may be able to count how many...

ПEPEXOД : always use the Perechod !

by globetrott

Use the ПEPEXOД / Perechod !A perechod is a passage under the street, where you can cross the streets with heavy trafic in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Dont expect any cardriver to stop for a pedestrian at any place where there is no zebra-crossing with clear red lights and maybe a policeman closeby.I had such a situation, when I forgot one of my cameras in a park, while changing the film of my 2nd camera.I could watch a truckdriver, who was in charge of watering the park there, taking my camera, while I was standing at the other side of the street, devided by 3 tracks of heavy cartrafic in both directions. I had to run back all the way to the perechod and was lucky, that the watering-truck was still there. I simply entered the truck and asked for my camera, and I got it back. That was back in 2002, he might have had the intention to take it to the lost and found, or at least...

I found 50.000,- $ on the Red Square

by globetrott

I found 50.000,- $ on the Red Squareit fell out of a bag of someone walking in front of me - it actually was a bundele of a fake 50,-$ note and a lot of paper behind it wrapped up in cellophane and there was another man beside me, who watched the scene and picked up the money, as soon as he saw, that I did not pick it up myseIf.Instead I told him, to give it back to the "looser", but he simply said to me : ' Lets make 50:50 'I told him, this is not OK - and I ran after the ' Looser ' and told him, he lost the money, and the other man had it now but the ' looser ' started to cry :WHERE ARE MY 50000,- $ ? YOU HAVE TAKEN MY 50000,-$ !Show me YOUR DOLLARS !!!THIS was the moment , when I realized it was a trick, just to let me show them , where I hide my Dollars - they would have searched my money and would have taken it away, without me even realizing itI simply replied : I HAVE NO DOLLARS...
