Duty-Free Shopping

San Marino's economy is based almost entirely on tourism. And in order to attract tourists, the country offers duty-free shopping. An unfortunate result is that the country seems to be overrun with day trippers on a mad shopping spree. There are countless souvenir shops selling liqueurs, Moscato wines, leather goods, tacky glassware, cheap jewelry, replicas of medieval swords, and other assorted junk. The hoards of shoppers and souvenir shops spoil the asthetics of the country, in my opinion.

San Marino itselfWell, let's tell the truth. It's not that it's ugly - quite the contrary, it's a pretty place but.. it's just as pretty (or even less pretty) than many other neighbouring towns, but it gets a far larger share of tourism than it deserves, just because it does not belong to Italy. The trap within the tourist trap is the changing of the guard at lunchtime: two black cars stop in front of the government building, two anonymous personalities step in there, the cars drive off, a band parades in the tiny square and... the two carsstop around the corner where those people live. We have all been sucked in before, that's right. What I wouldn't recommend is to go to San Marino in a clowdy day - otherwise you will miss a breathtaking panorama of surrounding lands from the height of Mountain tht an Marino locates on!

S.Marino could be considered a huge tourist kitch trap itself, but, even more if you find a so foggy and cloudy day like we did.
