Liverpool FC souvenir shop: L is for Liverpool Football club Shop

by sourbugger

Fit in with the locals.... Many visitors to the city are devoted followers of Liverpool FC (current company excepted) and so the desire to buy replica kits and the like is no doubt attractive. The main store is at the stadium, underneath the 'Kop' although there is also another large store near Clayton Square in the city centre(just ask a local) Announcing Sourbugger's end of season Liverpool FC sale - whilst stocks last :Gerard Houllier's big book of management success. The Michael Owen guide to speaking simple Spanish.'How to score goals' by Emile Heskey All very overpriced (including the above)

upmarket shops in the West Midlands...: M is for the 'Mailbox' in Birmingham

by sourbugger

I'm in the south.... honest..... In its' quest to become a modern, trendy city, Birmingham UK, the mailbox is an attempt to create an upmarket shopping area. It claims that the the shopping centre / hotel / restaurant / parking / chewing gum holder development is the, and I quote, 'biggest mixed use development in the U.K'. That is as maybe, but it also means that in the quest to 'cutting edge' the place suffers from the worst examples of 'developer speak'.I'll try and translate a little for you :1) This unique development offers a truly integrated lifestyle choice for the first time in the city's history. It brings together designer fashion and lifestyle shops, luxury apartments, two hotels, secure 24 hour parking and an array of restaurants and café bars. All in an exclusive waterside setting only two or three minutes walk from New Street station.Means : We got anybody we could to be...

Ratzinger's medicine shop (joking!): V is for Vatican Pharmacy

by sourbugger

No Johnnies available by sourbugger The Vatican Pharmacy is located just inside the Vatican City and open to the public, it is claimed one of the world’s most well stocked, with foreign products as well as Italian ones.On the other hand, even if you are armed with the requisite prescription and I.D the products reflect the values of the Catholic Church. You will be looking long and hard if you think you will find contraceptives, Viagra or Medicinal Cannabis !

Clare Jam Company: D is for Doolin's jam shop

by sourbugger

All natural ingredients... The Clare Jam company stands in an idyllic position in a clifftop position a mile or so to the south of Doolin. The Manufacturing area is not much bigger than a good-sized garage but they make a bewildering variety of very high quality jams. The small attached shop sells them from between 2 Euro 40 a jar and 3 Euro (for the normal sized jamjar)I especially liked the more unusual flavours such as the Orange marmalade I found with added Poitin (a legal version of Irish Potato moonshine) and spices. They make great presents.

Various: C is for Czech Chandaliers...

by sourbugger

Now you swing from the chandalier ! Bohemian glass is available all over the country at broadly similar prices. We found the glassware to be attractive, but not especially different to the thousands of other producers all over the world. We did however fall for the Chandaliers, which come in both traditional and more modern designs. At around 300 Euros, a larger one represented extremely good value, and the thing packed down into quite a small space - the way it all fitted together with everything safe certainly put IKEA to shame ! We bought ours in Karlovy Vary. You can also visit the factories there, which may work out a little cheaper. The shops selling them in Prague were marginally more expensive : probably due to more tourist about and higher costs.

Various, Euroworld, Europlace etc: B is for Brussel's Euroland shops

by sourbugger

Ode to joy...or not as the case may be As an Englishman it seemed a little strange to me that people would willingly pay to have various bits of clothing or souvenirs emblazoned with the symbols of the European Union. I know we are ?All friends together now? but it still seems somewhat naff to plaster yourself with the symbolism of the armies of faceless eurocrats who run our lives. If however it appeals to you (you good europeans) then there are a number of shops around the Grand place area and inparticular on rue de Marche aux herbes with names like 'Euroland' or 'Euroshop'.I also found (if your interested) an interesting website that see certain 'worrying' signals in the choice of symbols made for the E.U. check out their complete claptrap at :www.inplainsite.org/html/ european_union.html

About every other shop: A in for Andorra's duty free Whisky

by sourbugger

Don't end up with paintstripper When buying Whisky in Andorra be very careful to see where it is made.Sometimes bottle can look very "Scottish" with the logo and typeface used but the stuff inside has never been near Scotland in it's life. The Same applies to other drinks like Gin , but, the the quality is usually not quite so distinguishable from the real stuff. very variable - don't buy too cheap !

'arrods: H is for Harrods, London...a useful cornershop

by sourbugger

If you happen to live in the Knightsbridge area then Harrods is a useful little place to stock up on life essential - pate fe foie gras, Buluga Caviar, etc.Seriously though, Harrods is on may people's 'must see' list, and it is an impressive store. I rememeber an episode of the 'Good life' comedy on the BBC when Margo is asked how she will celebrate Christmas. She replied "Oh, we order it from Harrods and a little man brings in round in a van". That kind of sums up the place it has among a certain section of society,Within the store itself the Food halls are perhaps the most impressive section with their hanging hames, game, seafood waterfalls and the life. The displays and decor are very impressive. The Egyptian rooms on the ground floor perhaps remind me more of the type of themeing you would get in an American Theme park, but the hundred of thousands Alfayed spent on them in homage to...

Harmony: X-rated shop in London

by sourbugger

The shop in question is located at 167, (surprsied it wasn't 69 ) Charing Cross Road, just down Tottenham. Court road tube station.Harmony has taken sex shops (I never know why they are called that, surely they should be done under the trade descriptions Act, as they don't actually sell 'it') into the new bohemian spirit of London in the 21st century - or the naughty noughties as some people call them. The shop looks much more like an upmarket clothes shop with bright lights, well displayed stock and acres of shiny aluminum. They have managed to take the 'seedy' out of sex shops. You feel no more uncomfortable browsing on its three floors than hanging around the lingerie counter of your local Marks and Spencer.Europe A-Z Everybody needs furry handuffs and a giant inflatable sheep in life DVD's around 20-30 quid

VAT TAX REFUND RULES

by thinking

All the rules for getting a refund is set out for you at the website below. I often shop for French perfume when they have a sale of 20% off. Then I can also get the VAT TAX refund, making this French purchase affordable. There is no VAT TAX refunds in the USA. There you must buy low or at wholesale prices in a non-sales tax state, ie: New Hampshire, Delaware, etc.
