Summer in Slovakia can be surprisingly hot (over 40 degrees sometimes!) When the heat hits in BB, grab your suit and hit up the water park just outside the centre. It's huge and has multiple pools for all different tastes, including a kiddie pool, and a man-made lake for boats. It can get pretty crowded when the heat is running high... but in a country where air conditioning isn't the norm, it's your best bet!

The most noteworthy historical relics are in the castle area - the oldest part of Banská Bystrica. The Church of Assumption of Virgin Mary built in the romanesque style in the 13th century; the most famous chapel by Master Paul of Levoča dedicated to St. Barbora the patroness of miners; the Gothic triptych from the 15th century; metal baptistry from 1475; the ornamental sculptures of St. Andrew; Saints from the Mount of Olives; the decoration of the vaults by J. Schmidt.

Isn't this picture gorgeous! It was taken by a member of the Yahoo club, Visiting Slovakia. I asked his permission before using this on my Banska Bystrica page. This view is why I wanted to visit Banska Bystrica. I didn't get to see this view on my trip, though. But, I will write more later.

Go hiking in Slovensky Ray, the Slovakian Paradise. A very nice area with forest, steep valleys and pretty sights everywhere.

Q: Can anybody recommend us decent one-night-accommodation in Banska Bystrica, considering the fact that we are budget travelers?

A: look up Hotel Lux, basic but good enough for gettin some sleep.
