Dolna is one of the main streets of Banska Bystrica and contains colorful, historic houses. Some of the houses have stood since the early 1600s. In the 17th century, a Hungarian king was selected in one of the houses. Some of the structures on this street are even older and date from medieval times.
This area is a must-visit in Banska Bystrica and is a nice place to walk in the evening on your way to the town center.
The Soviet Liberation Monument is located in the main square of Banska Bystrica. The citizens put up this monument because of the Soviets help in freeing their city in 1945. It’s very tall and black and looks out of place next to the beautiful, pastel row houses.
Banska Bystrica's Church of Our Lady dates from the thirteenth century. In 1761 the church was destroyed, but later rebuilt. Inside the church, you can view the different altars, statues, and intricate paintings. This church is located next to the Barbican and is one of the city's main sights.
A long time ago, Banska Bystrica built walls around itself in preparation for the Turks' arrival, but nowadays just a few parts of them are left. It's an interesting piece of history to see and is one of the city's best attractions.
Summer in Slovakia can be surprisingly hot (over 40 degrees sometimes!) When the heat hits in BB, grab your suit and hit up the water park just outside the centre. It's huge and has multiple pools for all different tastes, including a kiddie pool, and a man-made lake for boats. It can get pretty crowded when the heat is running high... but in a country where air conditioning isn't the norm, it's your best bet!
The most noteworthy historical relics are in the castle area - the oldest part of Banská Bystrica. The Church of Assumption of Virgin Mary built in the romanesque style in the 13th century; the most famous chapel by Master Paul of Levoča dedicated to St. Barbora the patroness of miners; the Gothic triptych from the 15th century; metal baptistry from 1475; the ornamental sculptures of St. Andrew; Saints from the Mount of Olives; the decoration of the vaults by J. Schmidt.
Isn't this picture gorgeous! It was taken by a member of the Yahoo club, Visiting Slovakia. I asked his permission before using this on my Banska Bystrica page. This view is why I wanted to visit Banska Bystrica. I didn't get to see this view on my trip, though. But, I will write more later.
