The Dubliner is popular Irish Pub in the old city. It is full of tourist, usually drunk watching football on TV. It was not that interesting for me there and add to this that the beer cost there 50% more then in the other more intimate pubs.

Just off America Square, this downstairs bar/club plays a mix of r&B & hip hop. Very much a locals place, it was heaving at 1am and keep filling up throughout the night. Surly bouncers and very much a beautiful people place where the guys have attitude and the women seem to be vetted before they're allowed in to eliminate any monsters. Go to the loo's upstairs and take a slide back down to the bottom bar! No idea of what it was called but it was practically across the street from McDonalds. Mind those trams

A nice bar in the old town with a Heaven and Hell theme, more focused on the latter. In fact, the only saintly apparitions are to be found in the bathroom. But the beer is cheap and tasty. There are two local varieties, light and dark. I recommend the dark. Live music to be occasionally enjoyed.
Dress Code: It's a bar. Come as you are.

I came to The Dubliner for the decidedly international crowd and quickly started talking with some American soldiers who were stationed in Bratislava. They all said they loved the town (you know, cheap beer and hot women) and didn't want to leave anytime soon.
After a few minutes, this British guy (pictured here) named Richard Wood (hmmmmm???-did he make that up?) claiming to be a journalist pulled up a stool and just sort of joined in. At first, he got the cold shoulder from all the soldiers. At first impression, he was a little strange, but after a few minutes, he began to intrigue everyone and we ended up having a few Zlaty Bazants (the local beer, which translated to English means "Golden Pigeon).

Havana is one of my favourite venues in Bratislava. Although extremely expensive compared to most other places, it is large a confident and dynamic crowd who mix there - a lot of internationals too. I even saw Woody Harrelson there recently!
The bar is open 7 days a week and has a dancefloor with authentic latin tunes always on the go.
The cocktail menu is probably one of Bratislava's best too.

The Slovak Philharmonic's home is in the Redoute (the French word for "dance hall") Building, a former granary from the 18th century that was bought by the city and redone with Rococo and Art Nouveau touches in the early 1900s.
The Slovak Philharmonic was formed in 1949 and today you can see performances of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, the Slovak Philharmonic Choir as well as a few other minor ensembles.

I met these two girls, Helena and Michele, at a bar on Hviezdoslavovo Square. They spoke a little English and were fun to hang out with for an hour or so. In some places I've been in Eastern Europe, I've found it difficult to get locals to open up, but these two were fun and happy to talk about youthful things . . . music, the party scene, sports, etc.

I couldn't tell you anything about the food or the quality and selection of the beers, but I can tell you that I had a good time at the Slang Pub. It's a good place to find people interested in having a good time. I paid 35 crowns for a beer and since I was in Bratislava, stuck with the local favorite, Zlaty Bazant.

Kristof is a former Slovak ski champ who emigrated to California in the sixties or seventies and came back to Bratislava in the nineties to open a pub. He's affable and chatty, especially when English-speaking guests come in. The décor of the pub is also quite an experience: steep, steep stairways and lots of hipno-wheels make even the sober wobble a bit.
Dress Code: Casual. Definitely casual.
