An excellent lebanese restaurant with a very central location - below the castle, close to the Old town.
Favorite Dish: I really liked all their starters, especialy hummus and other spreads, a must is a dish from lamb but you'll find your way if you're looking for somethign vegeterian too.

The Carpathian Wine Route strecthes from Bratislava to Trnava and is a home of a numbe of well known Slovak wine makers. There are many wine cellers in all the towns across the route that organize regular/less regular wine tasting activities and the peak attraction are the Open Cellar Days that take place during two days in November and lately also on one day in May. If you happen to travel to Slovakia during his period do not miss the chance to visit this event and soak up the special atmosphere and most of all taste quality wine form various Slovak producers. For more information check-out the website below and see my Open Cellar Days feature.

If Slovak chefs have a motto, Im guessing that its, "nothing goes better with cabage than cabage". Dont assume however that cabage and cabbage is not delicious because you would be very wrong. Despite its affinity for cabbage, authentic Slovak cuisine at KGB also incorporates meat and potatoes quite nicely. If you are a hard core mother-f-er then you will definately love both the Slovakian hard rock that is blasted, and the underground smoke chamber filled with commie memorabilia decor at KGB. The smell WILL stick to you for days.
Favorite Dish: Potatoes "stuffed" with bacon and sourcream.

Just off the main shopping street of Obchonda (number 42a) this converted cellar has been lovingly restored and stylishly furnished. My father and I dined there 3 weeks after its opening and can only describe it as the best food and service we have had in weeks. The service was attentive but not intrusive - we worked out he must be the owner as he appeared to actually care about his diners. His English was broken but still very good (thanks to me he now knows a small cabbage is a brussell sprout!) and his timing on when to bring bread, more wine, different courses was spot on. The place has great lighting which darker but illuminated by feature lighting, the furniture was definitley not IKEA. There was also a fantastic projector wall which played (at the time we were there) music video's - not at all a party place (my 53 year old dad bopped along) as the music wasn't loud - just made the place more comfortable and chilled. Great if you want to go somewhere relaxing where you don't feel rushed, food is amazing, and staff genuinely glad to have you there. 10/10 - beats the Castle any day!!
Favorite Dish: I had the pork schitzel which was cooked to perfection and the English vegetables (carrots, broccoli, brussell sprouts - doused in butter and herbs) which was cooked to perfectionj. Dad had stuffed himself full of pasta and beer at lunch and even though he wasn't hungry, didn't leave anything behind. Although we didn't have it - the owner recommended the tiramasu (which he said was made in house). I was happy with the wine which was the house (OK) but apparently he holds the best of Slovak and Austrian wines (I've tried those and they are very nice - my liver could be in a bit of trouble if I stayed any longer)

The Restaurant Lyra is a local Slovak restaurant which is popular among locals and travellers. The rooms are simply furnished, but the food is tasty and reasonably priced.
On tap is the local beer Zlaty Bazant. Restaurant Lyra has a pleasant outside seating area in the historic Old Town.

At the end of Hviezdoslavovo namastie, there is a corner pub & restaurant called Peklo Hell Holle. I'm not sure what it really means but the theme of the joint seems to be related to the underworld. However, the food & drinks are nothing like it though. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the local beer here was good & cheap.
The restaurant also has an open space just outside where patrons can sit & enjoy when the weather is good.
Favorite Dish: You can try between a light and dark colored Slovak beer which are both good. Local food is also served here and I tried a sort of potato & meat dish which went well with the dish

A restaurant in a Bavarian style. The seats are set into areas for 6. We were a party of about 50 and spoilt throughout the evening from the complimentary drink as we came in to the various courses that we helped ourselves to. The entertainment was first class and it wasn’t long before the singing started.

Not far from the Danube coast, when you hit the historical centre lies a small pedestrian zone with a lot of terraces and cafes. I decided to sit in a nice, modern looking cafe and restaurant, opposite of all the loud British beer and ladies tourists getting steaks and fries. I like the airy modern atmosphere, the food choice is great and I chose an asian prawn dish with coconut milk. I loved it. Prices are acceptable. Lunch for 2 with prosecco - 15 euros!

For breakfast the second morning, we strolled the old town toward the castle, and happened upon a small coffeehouse called Cafe Hemingway. This was a trendy & modern little place with several tables full of locals just chatting their morning away. We had cappuccino for 45 SKK each. Their selection of food was very sparse, just a few breads and sweets under glass that looked like they might have come from a local bakery.
After finishing here, it was just a short walk to the castle.

Verdict bar & restaurant is in the Old Town of Bratislava. They have big windows facing the pedestrian street, so it is nice to have a coffee there while doing some serious people watching :). I went in after a short snowstorm and was thankful about their chicken soup with noodles, which was rather good. If you are there in winter try the Hot Apple drink with cinnamon, I loved it.
