You can't miss it looming on a hill over the city. It has a long history and there has been some form of human activity here practically since the beginning of time! The castle has been around since the early 10th century and it burned down in the early 19th century, but was rebuilt in 1953.

Today, it houses part of the collection from the Slovak National Museum and provides nice views over the city and the Danube River below, but otherwise I wasn't overly impressed with my visit. The courtyard is pretty ho-hum, but the views make it worth a stroll on a nice day and you'll see some interesting steps leading up to the castle along the way.

It's open from 9am to 8pm Tuesday through Sunday.

The Castle (Bratislavsky Hrad) was first mentioned in 907. In the 18th century it was turned from a fortress to a royal residence by the Austro-Hungarian Queen Maria Theresa. Nowadays it looks like a flipped-over table and houses the Historical Museum.

The most visible landmark in Bratislava, Bratislavsky hrad is in full view way before you ever hit town. It looks really good perched up on that hill, despite the unflattering comparison to an upside-down table but unfortunately, the closer you get, the less impressive it becomes. The present building is the result of reconstruction during the communist era and there is little surface evidence of its long history. It's too modern looking to have any dramatic impact and the interior courtyard is the drabbest and most featureless, I have ever seen in a public building anywhere.

There is a museum here, The Slovak National Museum of History, and probablya visit here would fill in the gaps left by the shortage of external detail. There's also a treasury and a small museum in one of the watchtowers. I didn't have time to visit any of the museums and my verdict on the castlewould have to be very disappointing. The views from the castle however made the trip worthwhile . ( Details in 'Off the beaten Track')

Although the castle was built in a Gothic style as an anti-Hussite fortress it was actually burnt down in 1811 leaving only ruins. In 1956-68 the castle was rebuilt. The castle is located on a hill overlooking the river Danube, the southern-most hill of the Small Carpathian Mountains. There are two ways to walk up to the castle - up Beblaveho street from the Old Town or from Mudronova street by the Slovak Parliament building up at the hill.

Bratislava castle is certainly one of the places no tourist will miss. The "upside-down table" is located on at the tip of the Small Carpathian Mountain Range. The area around the castle offers an impressive panorama on the different faces of the city. Below to the east are St. Martin`s Cathedral and the Old Town. The "New Bridge" connects Bratislava with Petralka`s endless apartment Blocks. To the west side is the Danube winding through farmland marking the border between Slovakia and Austria.

Nowadays there are two exhibitions of the Slovak National Museum in the castle. On the third floor the Museum of History can be visited and in Lugisland Bastion on the north side of the castle complex is an exhibition of historical instruments and manuscripts of Slovak composers.

The castle can be reached by Trolley bus No207 from Hodzovo Namestie, but it`s a quite pleasant walk from the Old Town up the hill.

The main attraction of Bratislava is castle hill with its castle which is the heart of old Bratislava. Castle hill was settled by ancient slavic tribes and there was also a roman settlement in the heydays of the Roman Empire. It was in the 8th or 9th century that the first wooden fortress was erected on the hill. This would evolve into the castle during the centuries.
The castle was one of the most important palaces of the Hungarian Empire, but most time played only the second filled to Vienna or Budapest. In times of crisis, for example during the ottoman occupation of Budapest, it served as an official seat for the ruling monarch, but was only an interim solution. In 1811, during the napoleonic wars, the castle was heavily damaged by a fire and fell into decay afterwards.
The castle suffered from many changes during the centuries of its existence and of course from 140 years of being left untouched after the destruction of the early 19th century. This means that you can’t the beauty of a medieval castle or the glance of a baroque palace like in other places. Some people say that it just looks like an ugly table put upside down. Fortunately, it is far away from this. But the refurbishment of the castle in the 1950s and 60s didn’t bring back the gamlour of the past.
Today, the castle is used as a museum with several smaller exhibtions. A permanent one gives you an impression about how the castle may have looked like in the past centuries, showing furniture and clothes from different eras. Parts of the crown jewellery (some as replica, including the Crown of St. Stephen) of the old (austro-)hungarian monarchies are shown in the Crown Tower. Outside, you can enjoy a nice view on the old town as well as some sculptures in the park. Watch out for the bronze statue of St. Elizabeth, the daughter of a hungarian king, who spent her childhood in Bratislava.

The Bratislava castle is a massive rectangular building with four corner towers standsing on a rocky hill of the over the Danube river in the center of Bratislava. You can’t miss it!

And so I went up to see the courtyard and was surprised to see two knights having a swordfight over a damsel in distress! Back into the medieval times --- I guess there was some kind of show and it was nice to see these costumed actors (I think it was a Sunday).

I would have worn a costume myself if given the opportunity – as the court jester, hehehe….
Inside is a prehistoric statue called the Venus of Moravany and several other important archeological findings in Slovakia.

But most importantly, the castle provides a stunning view of Bratislava and even of Austria and Hungary in the distance with good weather!

The castle is currently closed for renovation although it did appear that some of the museums and gift shops were open. It's still worth walking up to the castle though to get a nice view over the old town and the Danube River.

The castle was built in the 15th century by Emperor Sigismund in anticipation of an attack by the Hussites, at one time it was the seat of the Hapsburg Empire, burnt to the ground by Austrian soldiers in 1811 and restored when the Communists came to power.

The museums appeared to be open but we didn't bother with them, one is a historical museum and the other some sort of treasury

The Bratislava castle is built on the top of a hill in Bratislava and can be seen from quite a few locatio ns across the city. The hill is close to the old town. It has been said that this hill has been inhabited ever since the stone ages which, I guess, makes the castle on top more important. Plus the Slovakian Parliament is located right opposite to this castle. For going uphill, you have two options, either to take a tourist bus, or simply walk, I did the latter. It was a bit tiring though, but I was rewarded as I reached the top. I must say here, the view of the castle from the foot of the hill is very impressive while it might seem really unimpressive once you are up there, atleast I found it so. But the place is very nice and calm and has nice grassy ground for tired travellers to relax. the castle has a couple of museums inside it displaying armoury, coins, royal clothes, arts and other archaelogical findings, which were closed during my visit. The castle dates back from the 15th century, however during the early 19th century, it got burnt down and was restored during the communist era.

When you are walking around the castle and see it from backwards it looks like two dimensional building >:) what do u think?
But of course you wait some little comment to t his picture so we should start with a sentence like this Did you know....that when southern parts of Hungary had been invaded by the Truks, the coronation jewels of old Hugarian kings were moved to the Crown Tower of Bratislava castl. The jewels were stored here until 1784 when they were once again moved to the Imperial treasury in Vienna.
