Carlton Hotel at Hviezdoslav Square by HORSCHECK The Hviezdoslav Square (Hviezdoslavovo Namestie) is a nice elegant boulevard with trees and many restaurants and embassies (e.g. Germany, Czech Republic and USA). The famous Slovak National Theatre (Slovenske nirodne divadlo) and the renovated posh Carlton Hotel are located at the eastern end of the boulevard. Leave a Comment Directions: The Hviezdoslav Square connects the Danube bank near the New Bridge with the Old Town.

by Imbi I believe that Andrej Bagar is one of the famous people. The statue of Andrej Bagar is next the stone, which shows the name of him. The stone also mention the date of birth and death of Andrej Bagar and according to it he was born in 1900 and died in 1966. I have been told by Skipka that Andrej Bagar (1900 - 1966), actor, director and teacher, is a founder of the Slovak professional theatre. Leave a Comment

Hviezdoslavovo Nam is another lovely square in the historic old town. On the eastern end of the square is the beautiful Slovak National Theater. The fountain in front of it is of a Trojan youth being kidnapped by Zeus who is disguised as an eagle, you can see a tortoise, frog and crayfish along the edge of the basin. The north side of the square has cafes and on the south side is the Hotel Carlton, a consolidation of three hotels built in the 1920s and now taken over by the Radisson Hotel chain. There were a few more souvenir vendors set up in the square but not as many as in the main square. Leave a Comment

Werne Restaurant by Astralka Sorry for the photo, that you can not see much of the square.. You will recognize it after a huge statue of the poet P. O. Hviezdoslav. However I took picture of my favourite Werne restaurant, which can be found here. Hviezdoslav wears mustache, which I hate. Opposite Werne restaurant there is Carlton Hotel and just one minute walk will take you to the Slovak National Theatre. Leave a Comment

Slovak National Theatre by BorneoGrrl At one end of Hviezdoslav Square (Hviezdoslavovo námestie), stands a beautiful building in Neo-Renaissance design by Viennese architects F. Fellner and H. Helmer. This is the Slovak National Theatre built in the late 19th century and is the oldest Slovak professional theater. Address: Hviezdoslav Square, BratislavaDirections: In the Old Town, walked towards Hviezdoslav Square (Hviezdoslavovo námestie). It is at the end of the square

by Imbi This fountain was designed by the Bratislava-born V. Tilgner in 1888. It depicts figures from anciet mythology. The eagle is carrying the young man Ganymede to the top of Mount Olympus so that he can serve the Gods, on the order of the Goddess Dia. On the upper part of the middle basin there are sculptures of aquatic creatures whilst, lower down, the central column is surrounded by figures of children with fish from the river Danube. by Imbi This square began to take shape in the 17th century. At this time it lay just outside the fortifications on the Southern part of the city. After the demolition of the town walls in the 18th century the Western end was planted out with trees and named Promenáda (The Promenade). At the eastern end the of the square the Guild Theatre was built and the square became known as Divadelné námestie (Theatre Square). Its present title is in honour of the great Slovak poet P O Hviezdoslav, a statue of whom can be found in the centre of the square Leave a Comment Address: Hviezdoslav Square

This is one of my favourite places in this lovely city, a nice boulevard and square just at the edge of the old city where you can walk, sit on the bench and give some rest to your feet after walking the whole day Leave a Comment

Slovak National Theater at Hviezdoslav Square by Airpunk, 1 more photos This is more a boulevard than a square, but still one of the most elegant places in Bratislava. The mighty trees and the even lmightier palaces give it a world-class charme. Among the mentionable buildings are the Carlton hotel and the Slovak National Theater from 1884. Many embassies are located at the northern side of the square. Unfortunately, at the eastern side, there’s the modern Novy Most (New bridge) which doesn’t fit into the scenery looking from Hviezdoslav Square. The square was named after a slovak poet called Pavol Orszagh Hviezdoslav. Leave a Comment Directions: Close to the Danube, south of the old town
