St Martin's Cathedral is probably the most famous of Bratislava's churches. During the construction of the bridge and dual carraigeway that carved up the Old Town, it just about survived intact but now has the dubious attraction of a major road almost going right through it. Approaching from the Old Town side though, it still retains its character and you have to crane your neck very high to see the tip of the spire which has a replica of the royal Hungarian crown on it. This crown weighs 300kg, 4kg of which is actual GOLD, so I'm wondering if there have been any attempts to steal it ? The importance of this church stems from the fact that it was the coronation church for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. By 1830, 8 queens and 11 Hungarian kings had been crowned here. Toay it's hard to imagine the pomp and splendour that must have taken place here, because the interior is quite ordinary. The most interesting feature is the large statue of St Martin, depicted as a Hungarian horseman who cuts up his cloak and shares it with a poor man. Open Monday to Friday: 10.00-11.45 am and 2.00- 2.45 pm. Saturday: 10.00 am - noon and 2.00 - 4.45pm. Sunday: 2.00 - 4.45 pm Admission prices are posted in the porch of the church but when I visited, nobody was collecting them Address: Rudnayovo namestiDirections: Not far from the Old Town square.Website: www.bratislava.sk

Trinitarian Church by littlesam1 This very old church sits just outside of the entrance to the Old Town section of Bratislava. Founded in the late 1600's by the Trinitarian Order this church is kind of a bizarre pinkish/orange color on the outside. We were unable to go inside the day we were here but we did look in the windows. The inside was much more attractive and we wished that we would have been able to have gone inside. Leave a Comment

The gothic style St. Martin's Cathedral (Dom Sv. Martina) dates back to the 14th century. by micas_pt Franciscan Church is the oldest church in town (that is inside Old Town), dating back to the 13th century. Close to this church is another must see – St John the Evangelist Chapel, a 14th century Gothic chapel that was built after Sainte-Chappelle in Paris. Both buildings are beautiful and they really impressed me, as they were some of the first sights I saw while walking in Bratislava. They are near the Town Hall, so be sure not to miss them. by micas_pt This is a beautiful church, with its 85m high tower overlooking the Old City. The Cathedral stands in the place of the former parish church that was built in the 13th outside the castle. This church has seen a lot of events in city’s history from which the 19 royal coronations that took place between 1563 and 1830 was the one that impressed me the most!! This Cathedral has also housed musical performances, such as Mozart’s Requiem in 1834 and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis in 1835. Leave a Comment

A modern-style church built in 1636-1638 as a German Evangelic church. It was assigned to Jesuit Order that adjusted it, equiped it in a baroque style and embellished in 1672 during the period of recaolization. There are precious rococo pulpit from L. Gonde and altar pictures from F. X. Palko inside in the church. Leave a Comment Address: Frantiskanske namestieDirections: Frantiskanske namestie is connected with Hlavne namestie (Main square).

The Church of St. Elisabeth, commonly known as the blue church in Bratislava is one of the most unimpressive buildings I have come across. The name comes from the blue colour of the walls of the church. It does not really give you the feel of a church. Nevertheless, it is something that one might consider seeing in the city, being something different. Address: Bezrucova street, Bratislava

by Skipka Every French town has its Notre Dame, its proud and so we do. :) St. Martin's Cathedral should be named like this. This biggest, oldest and most spectacular church. It was built in eed to move the provost's church dedicated to the Most Holy Saviour from the castle into the settlement below. The oldest act says that this Church institution possessed archives, a library and a deposit room where valuable liturgical objects were kept. The oldest seal of the Pressburg provostship is from 1288. However, there are just fragments saved from this church and theuy were collected and put into maisonry of the pointed window next to the southern anteroom. In time when Bratislava became a free royal town, there were some political struggles among ecclestical and secular powers but the church itself always had been autonomous place. The reconstruction carried out since 14th ct under the patronage of the ruler and the town council created a new "outfit" in the Gothic style. There are several similar gothic churches in Vienna whose constructers also worked here on this church but elements influencing the development of Central European architecture such as segmented arches in the tower appeared for the first time in this building. The author of the three aisled hall is Hans Puschpaum. The church was ceremoniously consecrated in 1452. Leave a Comment
