by acemj The old Medieval town of Bratislava was fully fortified and surrounded by a wall. There were four gates and this one is the only one that still stands today. It dates back to the 14th century, but was redone in a Baroque style in the 18th century at which time the statue of St. Michael was placed on top. Entering the town through this gate used to require passing over a drawbridge, but today there is a stone bridge in its place. You can see the tower from all around the relatively small Old Town and it's even possible to go to the top of the tower for great views over the city. There is also an exhibit of weaponry and ancient fortifications that is part of the City Museum. Leave a Comment

by micas_pt Inside St Michael's Gate you will find another "typical" Bratislava sculpture. This one is Zero and it points distances from Bratislava to other world cities. Zero is Bratislava distance from sculpture and bronze shape of the "land-mark". As you might notice, locals just cross this place unaware of Zero on the floor, as in others cases i've referred these sculptures have become part of their daily life. Leave a Comment

by micas_pt Some pedestrian streets in old city centre will be a good choice for walking around this lovely city and mingle with locals. The street that leads to St Michael’s Gate – Michalská Ulica – is a nice place for this. Here you will find lots of options for shopping or just window-shopping, both local and international shops and makes. You will also find some nice restaurants and pubs on this street and surroundings. Besides shopping, you will be able to see and visit some beautiful buildings such as the Pallfy Palace, the Library and, of course, must see St Michael’s Gate and Zero. Leave a Comment

by micas_pt St Michael’s Gate is the only preserved gate to the Old Town. Its green top tower rises high up and can be seen from different sites inside Old City and city centre. Inside the tower there’s a Museum and it is said that from the balcony you can enjoy a beautiful view over the city. Unfortunately I had no chance of proving this as i arrived after museum was closed – it is opened every day between 9.30am and 4.30pm except Monday. Leave a Comment

Going up the Michael Tower, Bratislava, Slovakia by jumpingnorman So I arrive in Bratislava and the first thing I notice is this nice tower (which I thought at first was a church), and which I later found was called Michael’s Gate right at the eastern entrance of Old Town. I like to climb up towers in cities because I love panoramic views. Fortunately, the tower was open and got the stunning view I wanted after climbing up its 50 meter height. This is the only surviving watchtower of the original city fortification and was built in the early 14th century. Micahel’s Gate also features the Museum of Arms and City Fortification, open Tue – Sun, from 9:30am to 4:30pm in the summer season. And underneath the tower is the “ zero kilometer” which shows directions and distances to “29 cities in the world.” Leave a Comment

by Skipka St. Michael's Tower is the only preserved gateof the city's original fortifications. The pyramidal Gothic tower was constructed in the first half of the 14th century. In 1511 it was raised and in 1753-1758 the tower was given its present form. To protect it, an outer stone construction was put up as a barbican. In 1712 it was given a baroque form with passage-way. Some years later, a stone bridge was contructed over the moat with the statues of St.Michael Archangel and St.John Nepomucene. Today, the tower houses a Museum of Weaponry and Medieval Art of Fortifications. The upper terrace permits an interesting view of the city. Leave a Comment Address: Michalska ulica

A good place to start touring the Old Town of Bratislava is Michalska Brana (Michael's Gate), it's extreme northern point. This is the only existing gate from the city's original gates. From the main road opposite to the Trinitarian church, just walk over a small bridge through a gateway. The top of the Michalska brana is visible from many parts of the city. The copper spire turned green now dates back to the 18th century while the lower part is from the 13th century. Address: Old town

by Imbi This renaissance town house, with it's massive diamond portal, was built in 1648 by German builders for the rich merchant and patron of the Protestant Church in Bratislava, Andrej Segner. In 1704 the well known physicist, doctor and inventor of the so-called "Segner wheel" ( forerunner to today's turbine), Ján Andrej Segner was born here. He also worked as a professor at the Universities in Jen and Hall. He died in Hall in 1777. Leave a Comment
