by night by Skipka When you are going in the darkness back from the concert or theatre Arena, you should pass via Old bridge (Stary most). The view is even that beautiful that you will stay on the birdge for a while , no matter that Danube is flowing under you and makes you sick. ;) Leave a Comment

In front of the National Gallery and all along the banks of the Danube, you can't miss Novy Most. While much of the communist architecture in Bratislava is pretty gruesome, this bridge is definitely an exception. I'm not sure if opinions are divided on this but as far as I'm concerned, this bridge looks amazing. Formerly known as the SNP ( Slovakian National Uprising ) Bridge, it was built between 1969 and 1972 and is the 7th/8th largest suspension bridge in the world. But unlike the other great suspension bridges, pillars are noticeably absent on this one . The pillars supporting the 'flying saucer' appear to lurch dunkenly backwards and the whole thing is held up by steel cables. The aptly named 'UFO' restaurant sits on top and a viewing gallery which can be accessed by elevator for a minimal fee. I didn't avail of this service, as merely looking at it made me dizzy but I was interested to read later, that the communists didn't like people going up and enjoying the views over capitalist Austria. The bad news about this bridge of course is, that a whole slice of the old town, including the Jewish area, was destoyed to facilitate its construction. This is why, when you cross it, you are abruptly landed practically right in the centre of town. Address: Connecting Petralzka with the Old TownDirections: The bridge is visible fom anywhere along the river bank and from most parts of the city.Website: www.bratislava.sk

New Bridge - Novy Most by HORSCHECK The famous New Bridge (Novy Most, former Most SNP) hangs on steel ropes of a leaning pillar. A restaurant and bar in the UFO formed top of the pillar offer great views of the city. The construction of the bridge in 1972 caused a lot of destruction to the historical part of the town. On the southern side of the bridge a little park (Sad Janka Krala) and a big shopping Mall (Aupark) can be found. Directions: The New Bridge is the main traffic and pedestrian arterie between the Old Town and the suburb of Petrzalka. Leave a Comment

The Communist era Novy Most, or the Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising, was built between 1967-1972 after they ripped up part of the Jewish Quarter. It looks like a giant UFO has landed on top of the bridge, indeed the name of the restaurant/nightclub on top is UFO. We didn't see how you'd get up to the top, the bridge is a very busy street, but apparently there is a lower deck to the bridge with pedestrian access. You can go up to the observatory, cost is 200sk (about $10US) or you can eat there but the prices are astronomical, appropriate I suppose since you are eating inside a spaceship. We saved our money and just got the nice free view from on top of castle hill. Leave a Comment

by micas_pt The Nový Most Bridge, also known as New Bridge, is a modern structure that crosses River Danube and has a shape often compare to an UFO. :-) This bridge was inaugurated in 1971 and that “UFO shape” is a restaurant with fabulous views over the city, the river and the surroundings. I was recently informed by member HORSCHECK (who visited Bratislava more recently) that the restaurant is now closed. Thanks for the information Holger!! Leave a Comment

Novy most by macicka Novy most (The New Bridge) is well know as Most SNP (Bridge of SNP), which was former name of the bridge. Special for this bridge is it's restaurant that looks like an UFO. It's name is Bystrica but unfotunately nowadays you can't have lunch there because it's closed. Leave a Comment Directions: Near hotel Danube

by acemj The New Bridge doesn't look like it fits the scene to me. I will always think of Bratislava as a wonderfully worn, historic, inexpensive, relatively lesser known GREAT European city to visit and this Communist era attempt at modern engineering just doesn't seem like it belongs here. It was built in the early '70s and at one time, there was a restaurant at the top of the structure you see in this picture, but it is now closed. Apparently (and tragically), much of the Old Town was destroyed in the construction on the bridge. Leave a Comment

most snp2 by Skipka This bridge was built between 1967-1970. However, as no building can exist independently from tis surroundings, the insensitive placement of this bridge and the ensuin negative consequences have not made the New Bridge a popular site among Bratislavians. The bridge appears to run straight into St. Martin's Cathedral and its access road unnaturally divides the Old town. In order to carry out the construction of the bridge, numerous buildings had to be knocked down such as Jewish synagoge, houses near it and also Fish market. Leave a Comment

most snp by Skipka The Bridge of SNP and Bystrica cafe at the top is one of the unique sightseen of this city but ... don't go there in November or when it's pretty windy. I did and hadn't time to drinku up my coffee because everything was shaken ... and I am really in panic from Earthquakes or so :) Leave a Comment Address: Crossing the Danube river

The new bridge (formerly known as the bridge of the Slovak National Uprising) is one of the most (in)famous monuments of Bratislava. It’s hard to say, if I like it or hate it – but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s there. The construction of this bridge commenced in 1967 and was finished in 1972. A part of the old jewish quarter next to the castle had to be destroyed during the construction. And if that’s not enough to hate it, try to “enjoy” the view on the castle from the south. It is always spoiled by the bridge. Today, we see it as an architectural crime of the 1970s – maybe in some decades we’ll learn to appreciate it. The bridge is the second bridge in central Bratislava leading over the Danube and is an important part of Bratislava’s road system. It has four car lanes on the top and two pedestrian/bike lanes well separated below them. Leave a Comment Directions: Over the Danube, close to the castle
