The Old Town Hall – The residency of the free king’s town Pressburg self-administration used to be the Old Town Hall. The complex of buildings from various period-styles is called the core of the Old Town Hall today. Originally, it was formed from the gothic house with reeve Jacob’s tower. It was mentioned in 1370 in King’s Ludovit letter for the first time. It has preserved almost unchanged until today. The portal of the house is simple, late gothic and it has been renewed with the latticed oriel with stone statues. There is the statue of Virgin Mary from the year 1676 on the quoin of the rococo stylized tower. The town bought the neighbouring Unger’s house in 16th century. In 20th century, the eastern annex was completed in the neogothic style, whereby the Primacial palace was joined with the Old Town Hall. This historical building is the residence of the town’s museum, today.

  • Inner courtyard of Old TownHall - Bratislava
    Inner courtyard of Old
    TownHall
    by Ekaterinburg
The Old Town hall faces onto the Hlavne namestie on one side and behind has an absolutely delightful courtyard. Both sides are very beautiful and both, in December, had absolutely buzzing Christmas markets. The building dates from the 14th century when a mayor built a house with a tower there. Eventually, several buildings merged nito one and by the 15th centyry, the town hall was roughly as we now see it. It's a bit of a mishmash of architectural styles with gothic, renaisance and Baroque all geting a look in. From the front, the yellow, baroque tower strikes a colourful note against the red roof tiles and the courtyard behind this tower is also a very striking space.

The Old Town Hall houses two museums, the Vinohradicke Museum, with a nod to the Slovakian wine industry and the City Museum , Muzeum historie mesta. This includes some torture implements as part of an exhibition of feudal justice and various other art and artefacts associated withthe town's history.

We have here a nice legend. The legend says:
Every year at midnight on the 1st of January, the top part of the fountain is said to rotate. However, according to tradition, this can only be seen by people born in Bratislava with the best human qualities.
But question is that why I didnt see it?:)
heheehe maybe beause Im not original bratislavian girl:)

The Main Square (Hlavné Námestie) is one of those places in a town that's new to you that helps with orientation. Bratislava isn't so big that you're likely to get lost, but this spot does help you stay grounded. The Old Town Square is truly the center of town. It used to be called Market Square because of the markets that would take place here and even today you'll see a number of vendors selling their wares mostly to the tourists passing through. The tower goes back to the 14th century, but was rebuilt in the 18th century in the Baroque style. The Maximilian Fountain is another point of interest in the center of the square. Legend has it that every January 1st the top of the statue mysteriously rotates, but since I was here in June, I can't verify that! Inside the complex of buildings, you'll find the city museum, although on my short visit, I didn't have time to squeeze that in.

The Old Town Hall (Stara Radnica) is a complex of three 14th-15th century buildings. One of them is the tower which does not only show the time, but also day and night by means of a ball. Last but not least the complex has a worth seeing inner court. At present the Old Town Hall houses the City Museum.

    Direction:
The Old Town Hall is situated on the western side of the Main Square (Hlavne namestie) in the centre of the Old Town.

The Main Square – Hlavné Námestie – is where the heart of the Old City lies. The tower and the Old Town Hall face this square, as well as some other beautiful buildings representing varied epochs and styles.

In the middle of the square there is a statue and fountain called the Maximilian Fountain that was built around 1572.

The Old Town Hall is one of the ex-libris of Bratislava, lying just in the centre of Old City. At least to me it was a major reference point, as everything else seems to be around or near this nice tower and building.

The Old Town Hall is a building that grew over the years and therefore there are details that reveal different styles and epochs. The tower itself grew and modified since the first tower was built in the 14th century. In 1733 there was a huge fire that destroyed the tower and it was rebuilt in Baroque style, the way it looks nowadays.

In the building you may visit the Museum (Municipal Museum), which is opened every day (except Monday) from 10am to 5pm, and 11am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The most important square of medieval town is a center of historical heart of town.
Former name of the square was The Market Square and it was renamed into The Main Square because not only markets took place here but also all social events such as celebrations and exucitions were done here.
Later on it was called The Square of 4th April which should remind people of the day when the Soviet army freed Bratislava.
Nowadays it's called The Main Square again...

Hlavné Námestie (Main Square) is situated in front of the Old Town Hall and has been updated to make it more attractive for tourists. In the square sits a fountain with the statue of Maximillian II (Hungarian king crowned in Bratislava) but it is called the Roland Fountain, dedicated to Roland, a knight and protector of the city.

A bronze statue of Napoleon's soldier leans on a bench in the square where you can sit and pose with the emperor. The Greek & Japanese embassies are also located at the main square.

This is the old town hall, which is also the city museum in the middle of the old city.
Here in front of this complex there is a nice square where you can just sit on a bench and relax. You can also find a place in few of the nice cafes around and have a beer.
