 | Bratislava Warnings or Dangers | Tips 1 - 10 of 69 | |
I always felt quiet safe and at ease while visiting Bratislava. No particular danger noticeable or warning seems necessary; although i think everybody must make use of their good sense and act as in every city in the world: beware of pick-pockets and similar "attitudes" when visiting crowded places or dark sites. Man begging for money by macicka There are many of them in Bratislava and all of them ask for money... You can see them in front of the churches, they come to restaurants, they r on the streets. One special type of these people are the ones that would ask you for money for a phone. They would tell you their mum is in the hospital..... Or they need money for the busticket.... Just one advice, stay assertive and don't give them any money, they are drug addicted for 99.9% Leave a Comment

Slivovica ID Parade! Have you seen this bottle? by flyingkiwi WARNING SLIVOVICA CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR LIVER! If you find yourself being approached by a pretty young lady going by the name of Angelika DO NOT under any circumstances accept her offer of "a glass of Slivovica". I did and I paid the price. Now I have to face the consequences (constant reminding and ridicule as a result of my pathetic attempts to drink Slivovica!). Learn from my mistakes... SAY NO TO SLIVOVICA! Let this be a warning to you all (especially you IPGs out there hoping to 'experience' some authentic Slovakian liquor!) Fk Leave a Comment

It is really very unpleasant situation when someone steals you money especially if you're on holiday. I should kill someone if it happened to me... Be carefull wherever you go especially when you will see larger group of Gipsies. They already have their developed tactics how to catch your attention and then they will take your money. Beware when there is a big qurrell around you or if they are too close to you, crowded places are especially successful. When something like this happened to you there is little chance to get back your money because they are organized and wallets are going from hand to hand so no policeman can prove the crime. Be careful. Don't take this tip like racistic... it has nothing to do with it, it's pure reality in city... Leave a Comment

Slovak banknotes by Skipka Just a simple advise ;) Never exchange money in the streets, it is definitely unsure if you will get the right banknotes :) and how much. There is an exchange office in every simple bank (and Bratislava has them as the whole Switzerland LOL ) so exchange them in the exchange offices and banks. Try to surf more banks before exchange there should be a little difference in the amount of money you can get. Leave a Comment

Although it can happen anywhere and I never thought it could/would happen to me. Standing in the tourist information centre in the main railway station a young girl tried to get into my handbag AND my rucksack. Luckily I was quick and she fled. Please be careful here and everywhere you go. Leave a Comment

I just want you all to be aware, that if you go to a pub or a restaurant , you are waiting for 20 minutes till somebody notices you, waiter doesn´t give you one smile druing whole dinner and looks at you like you are actually bothering him, it is not because you smell bad or look like homeless person. This style of service is actually NORMAL in Slovakia. It will take us a long time till we realize that actually customer is the person who gives us our salary. this is the resemblence of communist times, so please be patient. In 20 years we´ll get there........ I have to say that there might be some exception in Bratislava or even some other cities of Slovakia, but i just want you to be positively surprised and not disappointed. I would be very thankful if you wrote me any of your experiences of GOOD service in Slovakia. Thank you.

Take note that Slovakia´s legal blood-alcohol limit is 0,0. Drinking and driving is an especially bad idea here. Keep your driver´s license and papers handy at all times. The fine for speeding is 1000 Sk (25 USD) on the spot and seat belts are compulsory. Do not be surprised if the police levy a "fine" without writing a ticket. They are horribly underpaid and always looking for ways to compensate. Leave a Comment

Although seemingly a sleepy city Bratislava has it´s fair share of crime. Just like everywhere else in the world be vigliant about your personal safety. Yes, that means no wandering around inebriated, late at night, flashing money and talking loudly in English. Like many Central European countries, crime in Slovakia is relegated to the not totally uncommon pick-pocketing incident and the occasional drunken menace prowling the streets and corruption among the powers that be. This means that in general it is far safer than most major cities in the West. Unfortunately, despite persistent promises from the government to cut down on organised crime, visitors should be aware of a small yet significat underbelly to the city. Leave a Comment Phone: 158

In reality, the greatest dangers in Slovakia involve driving a car or walking down the street. Slovaks drive fast, pass when desired, not when advisable and look at pedestrians as speed bumps. Drivers tend to regard crosswalks as spilt paint. As in many developing cities sidewalks and construction sites are close cousins. Purchasing steel-toed boots and protective eyewear does not seem unreasonable on many days. :-) Leave a Comment
