Favorite thing: this little slovak town is just off the main zilina to bratislava main road, well worth a visit to the castle as this is where elizabeth bathory a.k.a countess dracula was held prisoner before being executed for killing local girls and bathing in their blood to keep young.
in the actual castle there is a restaraunt which does very reasonable fair.
also worth a look is the town church with its superb frescoes and painting and also to see the town carp ,which are in the river nearby, these are almost pets to the locals and are gigantic in size ,due to locals feeding them allsorts.
nearby is the village of sulov, with its out standing rock formations and bytca is the gateway to exploring the javorniky mountains, this area is very quiet and natural and totally peaceful.
getting there...
bus from zilina, the new zilina airport is about 5 miles away , and there is a train station, although not really within walking distance. there is a motel on the main road between bytca and zilina. w
well worth spending a day there.
Fondest memory: really friendly locals and of course those carp !
