Cerveny Klastor or the Red Monastery
evaanna Says:
Cerveny Klastor or the Red Monastery is located on the Dunajec River in the Spis district, which became part of the Hungarian Kingdom in the 11th century. Founded in 1330, the monastery was a seat of the Cartesian monks, one of the strictest hermitic orders. Their life in...
Brother Cyprian's cottage
evaanna Says:
Brother Cyprian's cottage is the only part of the Cerveny Klastor that is accessible to the public. He was a famous surgeon, doctor and pharmacist, who, in his most significant work 'Herbarium', written in 1766, describes 272 species of herbs found in the Pieniny and the...
Rafting trips on the Dunajec
evaanna Says:
This fantastic rafting trip is the main attraction of the area. As the Dunajec River constitutes the border between Poland and Slovakia, the highlanders from both countries running these trips compete for business here. The rafting is great: as the river meanders between the...

On top of the world
evaanna Says:
It's a much longer way from Cerveny Klastor to Lesnica by car than the 10 km you will have to cover if you choose to walk. But it's better to have your own transport as buses are few and unreliable. You will have to turn left just past the village Vel'ky Lipnik, drive up a...
Walk along the Pieninska Cesta or the Pieniny Path
evaanna Says:
To better absorb the breathtaking views of the Dunajec Gorge, you can take a walk from Cerveny Klastor to Lesnica along the Pieninska Cesta on the Dunajec bank. The distance is about 10 km and you will have to cover the same distance to get back to your car, so you may...

To hike or to bike?
Helpfulness
evaanna 1274 reviews
The path along the Dunajec River or Pieninska Cesta is accessible to bikes. You will have to be careful not to run into any walkers or fall off the cliff trying to avoid them but, as long as you don't race, both you and the pedestrians should be safe. A mountain bike would be better as the surface is a little uneven with some stones but trekking equipment might do. You can hire a bike at Lesnica (from the restaurant) and go all the way to Cerveny Klastor admiring the great scenery. Then you can either go back the same way or return to Lesnica via Vel'ky Lipnik with Tokarne on the way. You will need to be strong to ride up the steep road to Tokarne, but the climb is not long. And going all the way down to Lesnica can be a great experience.
Equipment: Bikes can be hired at the restaurant in Lesnica

The colours of autumn

We visit the Dunajec Gorge whenever we are in the area. The walk along its banks is an unforgettable experience with the rocky mountains towering above and the rapid current of the river beneath. The scenery changes with every bend, the air is fresh and pungent with the...
What would the monks say to this?
evaanna Says:
On entering the second courtyard of Cerveny Klastor or the Red Monastery abandoned by the monks ages ago we could not believe our eyes. Drawn across the flower-carpeted yard there was a clothes line with freshly washed bedlinen and children's clothes drying in the sun. The...
