The dam enables people to simulate natural periodical floods that had been happening here times ago and were eliminated after WWII by regulating the river. The floods cause many animal species returned here.

For sure the trip by boat from Bratislava. It depends what kind of boat you choose, slow one takes the whole day. Check the feature you will go through tail bay.
Spectacular feeling especially when you see all those gigantic doors ;)opening and the boat is like a feather there ;)

you can see everything: water, wildlife, dam, you can stop somewhere for swimming or sunbathing....

altough they are forbidden in the canal, you can practise them nearby, in the locations technically belonging to the dam project

the dam itself is probably what you have come here... and do not forget to see boats passing the lock chambers

It is for sure that Gabcikovo is a town named for the honour of one brave man from the WW II and I have never been in the town itself but there is a big river canal, our Slovakian Panama Channel :)......

Gabcikovo is just a village that has become known due to the dam built in the Danube river - a subject of argument between Slovakia and Hungary. Anyway, the dam is standing and often visited.
