Do you need a visa?

by matcrazy1

Citizens of many countries do NOT need a visa for tourist stay in Slovak Republic usually up to 90 days. Especially citizens of Canada, the USA and all 15 old and 10 new European Union countries do NOT need visa. But hmm... for example Australians need it. But this is subject to change.Check your local Slovak Embassy or Consulate or click here.

Where is Slovakia, Mr Bush?

by matcrazy1

Haha, don't be confused like Mr George W. Bush who made a mistake and was talking about Slovakia when he was in quite different country... Slovenia. Common mistake, I see!Slovakia (official name: Slovak Republic; Slovensko or Slovenska Republica in Slovak language) is an idependent, inland country re-born in 1993 (seperated from The Czecho-Slovak Federation, previously Czechoslovakia) located in geographical center of Europe, bordering: Austria, Czech, Poland, Ukraine and Hungary.Slovenia is an independent country seperated from former Yougoslavia in 1991, bordering Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Adriatic Sea.Slavonia is a province of Croatia - another contry seperated from former Yugoslavia. The last two countries are located at Balkans wheras Slovakia is placed north of them in Central Europe (usually called by Western Europeans Eastern Europe). All 3 countries belong to the same...

Discovering history

by matcrazy1

I found history of Slovaks, people with strong cultural heritage and no independent state (except 1939-1945) till 1993 very, very interesting. Notice that the area of present-day Slovakia was a part of Czech, Hungary, Austro-Hungary and Hapsburg Empire in the past. You can easy find a lot of Czech, Hungarian and Austrian influences seen especially both in architecture and in local cuisine. More to north and east these influences are weaker. BRIEF HISTORY270,000 B.C. - the oldest surviving archeological artefacts,6th c. - Roman legions arrived to South-West Slovakia,833 - united Slav State (called later Great Moravia) was est. by prince Mojmir, then Christianization of the Slavs,9-11c. integration of the territory of present-day Slovakia as multinational Hungarian State (although Hungarian ethnic group was minority), 1526 - the Battle of Mohacs won by Ottoman Empire, Slovakia became part...

Not severely affected by WWII but after

by matcrazy1

Slovakia - in contrast to say Poland - was not severely affected and destroyed during World War II (1939-1945) for at least two reasons, I think:- Slovak government was Hitler's ally; Prime Minister Tiso was hanged for treason and collaboration with the Nazis after WWII,- Slovakia is mostly mountainous country that is not the best area for wars at all. So, Slovakia was a little bit out of war theater during WWII.Unfortunately all private, old, historical buldings, palaces, manors etc. lost their private owners due to nationalisation forced by Soviet - Czechoslovak government after WWII. The communist regime didn't pay any attention to historical heritage, opposite - many historical buildings were destroyed or at least nobody took care of them for years. They became more and more neglected. Additionaly it seems that the government in far Prague paid more attention and money to Czech than...

Eight or three regions

by matcrazy1

The Slovak Republic is divided into eight administrative regions ("kraj" in Slovak language). They are named after each region's main city - enlarge my map, please. I know especially Zilina that is north-central region (brown one on my map) as it's located closest to my hometown and my former hometown, Krakow. Each region is father divided into several counties ("okres" in Slovak). There is another, simpler division widely used as well:Western Slovakia:Bratislava, Nitra, Trencin and TrnavaCentral Slovakia:Banska Bystrica and ZilinaEastern Slovakia:Kosice and PresovJust one notice at the end: the administrative divisions not at all reflect historical divisions of that area. But I decided to use them because they are widely used nowadays. Although traditional historical names of regions like Orava or Spis (in Zilina kraj) for example are still in use. Mountains and castles of Zilina region.

General facts and its implications

by matcrazy1

AREASlovakia is a small country (49,030 square kilometers = 18,930 sq mi), the largest distance east-west is approx. 400 km (248 mi), south-north approx. 200 km (124 mi). But it's mostly montainous country with lowlands in southern and south-western part (close to Austria and Hungary), so travelling around - especially by car - maybe a little slower.POPULATIONApprox. 5.3 mln of which 10,8% are Hungarians (Slovakia was a part of Austro-Hungary empire in the past), so you can see a lot of Hungarian influences in architecture and food - especially in southern and southwestern part of Slovakia.Another approx. 2.5 mln Slovaks live abroad now, mainly in the USA (almost 2 mln) - they immigrated because of lack of food, jobs and then because of political reasons (during Soviet communist regime past WWII).

Cerveny klastor and Dunajec river

by Skipka

Cerveny klastor is unique sightseen right on the edge of the border (Polish and Slovak :)) Cerveny klastor owns a great exhibit of plants collected by monk Cyprian. He was really funny person :) by my opinion because he tried to make a mechanism how to fly, then tried it from the nearby hills and when he "collected himself together" he healed himself by herbals :)) But after all he proved some unique facts about the plants (meadow flowers) that are known just in two parts of the Earth, found out healing treatments etc .. he had a green thumb and grew up some herbals by himself in his own small garden. What a face :)))Then you can try "rafting on Dunajec river" but rafting is a strong word for this ttraction LOL . There are special wooden vessells but very popular. You can go there from Poprad by bus (try to catch some buses in early morning..better for u)All additional info here...
