MetalChicken's General Tip

by MetalChicken

Romantic castle ruins are frequently seen on distant hilltops as your train speeds between towns. It is definitely worth taking the effort to explore some of these Hrads. One of the most impressive is Spissky Hrad towering over the village of Spisske Podhradie. I arrived here by bus from Levoca (also worth a visit for its medieval square and incredible collection of religious wooden carvings in the church of St Jakob)

Go up into the mountains. The High Tatras lie on the Polish border and are easily accessible via electric train up from Poprad-Tatry. Wonderful hiking country in the Summer apparently turns into a ski resort in the Winter.Hiking trails are well signposted and easy to follow.

The High Tatras could be called the smallest high-mountain range in the world. The main rage is only 26 km long, its highest peak , Gerlach 2655 meters height. The High Tatras deserve to be called high mountains, because of their high mountain character. Mountains were declared a national park to preserve the variety of rare fauna and flora. The range is divided into almost hundred of valleys and its relief is remarkable. You can find many attractions here, including mountain climbing, hiking, skiing, biking - you choose!

See the Raven speaking Slovak? Check out Orava Hrad, Raven Castle. Find a Slovak guide and drive through the country. Stop at all the great little nooks and crannies an outsider would miss. Slovaks are fun people and love to show off their great country. It is a hidden secret! Enjoy!

Have a tourguide, or a tour planner. This country remains a mystery to outsiders, and even the best of travel books, tells you nothing about what to see or do. You would also miss out on all of the great stories behind every town and castle. You must see as much as possible, or just relax at a spa for a while! It is a small country where layers of European history are juxstaposed one on top of the other. Visiting a Koliba. A sheep herding station that makes cheese, tends sheep and has great scenery and Slivovice!!(MOONSHINE). The Castle in Trencin Castle. The place where the Slavs stopped the Roman advance north. The Roman Army left an inscription on the walls in Latin, that is still there today.

Not for todays Western, yuppy, nightclub world! A peaceful, quite, loving, environment which has suffered much and trying to recover from the raveges of WWII and the communist regime - something Americans know nothing about. Many small villages with residents who illustrate the real meaning and 'basics' of life - the way God made it and the way 'things used to be' without the hubub, mad rushing around, environmental and cultural polution the Western world has generated -PEACE - in the TRUE sense! Try it - you'll like it!
