Former Slovak currency

Slovakia joined the European Union (EU) on the 1st of May 2004 and on the 1st of January 2009 Slovakia even became a member of the Eurozone. This means that nowadays the Euro is the official currency in the country.

When I was in Kosice, Slovakia still had the Slovak Crown (Slovenska Koruna) as official currency. The Slovak Crown was subdivided into 100 Heller (Halier).

You can get your local money with a credit or debit card from cash points or just by exchanging your local money at one of the many exchange offices.

Twin city: Wuppertal

When wandering around Kosice I came along a street sign stating "Wuppertal 1490 km".

Wuppertal is located in Germany and only about 60 km from my hometown. Wuppertal and Kosice are twinned since 1980 and it was one of the first partnerships between a big German town and a city of the former Czechoslovakia.

Other twin cities and partner towns of Kosice include Budapest (H), Verona (I), Ostrava (CZ) and Bursa (TR).

On my trips to Slovakia I always tried some of the local beers.

One of my favourite Slovak beers is the lager of Zlaty Bazant (Golden Pheasant). The brewery was founded in 1967 in Hurbanovo, and is nowadays owned by Heineken.

Another popular Slovak beer is Saris. The brewery was established in 1964 in Velky Saris and taken over by SAB Miller in 1995.

This building in the down town of the city has a beautiful history. The legend says:
Ages ago, in Kosice lived a man - a beggar. This beggar lived his boring everydays life and begged for money. Because he was a miserable poor man, kind people gave him a change, money or something else.
But this beggar was a clever guy. He didn´t spend this money. After a years of his beg, he collected a sufficient amount of money and in the center of city he built up this house. And he ordered for this house a statue of beggar,(what you can see at the top of the building) as a memory of fame of beggar form Kosice. That the legend talks...

If you are arriving for Prague thinking that you've picked up some Czech language you are in for a shock. This is a similarly written language for the most part but, completely different in speaking. English is quite well used here by business. It is afterall the 2nd largest city after Bratislava.
