But despite these achievements, his importance in the Slovak, respectively Czechoslovak history lies elsewhere. Štefanik as a soldier, later even general of the French Army was decorated with state prize – Order of the honour legion and gained many good contacts in high places. He mediated a meeting between T.G.M. and French PM Aristide Briand. This meeting is considered to be beginning of fight for establishing the CSR.
From this time supreme organization of the Czechoslovak foreign resistance movement – the Czechoslovak National Council began its work. Its main aim on the field of diplomacy was to initiate connections with western governments and in military sphere to build foreign legions in U.S.A., Russia, France and Italy made up of Czech and Slovak volunteers. In this case Štefanik played the most important role.
After war and establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic new state had a good position for negotiations at Paris peace conference, mainly thanks to the fact, that volunteer legions fought on side of the western countries. Štefánik became the first Czechoslovak Minister of the War.
Returning home from Italy he deceased in an aerial disaster.
His absolutely unexpected and tragic death met him as a 39-year old man at the height of his career.

Milan Rastislav Štefánik was born in Košariská. He came from a patriot family with conscious national efforts. He studied in Bratislava, later in Prague and finally he applied to the Faculty of Arts at Charles University where he graduated with a doctorate from philosophy. Besides studying, Štefanik also put his energy into club activities. He was a member, and chairman of the Slovak student club Detvan in Prague , which propagated Slovak culture, poetry and folk songs. In Prague he entered its intellectual society and also met among others Tomáš. G. Masaryk.
Štefánik arrived in 1904 to Paris with just a few things in his suitcase and a recommendation from his Prague professor and he was accepted as assistant in Jansen´s observatory.
His first excellent act in his new job was ascent from the town of Chamonix to the highest European peak – Mont Blanc. The main purpose was to observe sun and atmosphere on observatory constructed by famous Gustave Eiffel. Weather worsened and stay on the top was prolonged from a planned two weeks to final three. Already no one believed that members of expedition were still alive. On 21st day decimated and starving group was discovered in streets of Chamonix. The record of a stay on Mont Blanc was broken and it is unbelievable that observations took only 20 minutes out of a three-week stay.
Štefánik continued with his observations of sun’s eclipse in many other countries, among them Spain, Algeria, Brazil, Morocco, and Tahiti. For his astronomical research he won great acknowledgement in the French Academy of Science.

"Socialism with a human face", well.. this great man of act was a leader of Communistic party in 1960's and came with an idea to make socialism better according to wish of more freedom and human rights. However, we all know how it ended up... by occupation of Czecho-Slovakia in 1968 by Soviet troops. What is really weird that till now there is no culprit to judge this act because the invitation to come came from the country itself. But we should pay attention to Alexander Dubcek. After the bloody years 1968-69 he has been the president of Federal Council and later Ambassador in Turkey but then around year 1970 came a stream called Normalisation so he was pushed up to the isolation and he has lived ordinary life in Bratislava guarded by STB (organisation like KGB in USSR) till the Velvet revolution in 1989 when he was back on political scene. For me as a generation of chidlren who was born after 1970 and heard about him just from the parents it was really touchy to see him on my own eyes on the second demonstration of Velvet revolution here in Bratislava. Man who was born in Uhrovec - such as Ludevit Stur - came again successfully to politics as a symbol of democracy and liberty. His ideas about Socialism with human face brought ideas of pGorbachev's Perestroika almost 20 years before it should be possible to apply. Unfortunately, Dubcek died in the hospital in 1992 after the hard car accident while doing his duties. If he should be alive he was the best and famous candidate for the first Slovak president but unfortunately the destiny was other. He is buried on Slavicie udolie Cemetery in Bratislava and every year on 7th november when there is All Saints' Day people bring a little candle here. at the end of the day there are houndred of them what really shows the feelings of people towards him. He was awarded by many international prizes, got Honorary degree of Bologna University (in the period when he was persecuted) and his famous work is "Hope dies last" published in 1993.

Christmas cookies are made of more types of the doughs but this one is basic. :) Originally it becomes from Linz but it is very popular here in Slovakiaand there are families that bake more than 8 types of them for Christmas.
2 a 1/3 of wheat flour, 1 pack of butter (250 g), 3/4 pot of powder sugar, 3 yolks, 1 pack of vanilla sugar, lemon juice and crumbled

Simply everything put to the bowl and make a smooth dough. Then put it to the plastic bag and let it for 1-2 hours in the fridge to get the best consistency. Then roll it to the cca 3 mm thin and use sharp forms such as stars, hearts, circles etc .. Bake on paper or fatty plate around 5 min till the cookies get lightbrown color. Stick them together with great homemade marmalade, decorate by vanilla sugar or chocolate or by wallnuts etc it depends on taste. The best marmalade is of strawberries, blackberries, raspberries etc..
    Bon appetit :)))

Talking about fabrics and clothes there are unique embroideries and according them you should distinguish the area even the particular place here. It is something similar like Scottish skirts :) where every pattern has its meaning. I think that being embroidered or so is better like being labeled :) or checked by codebar :)

First Slovak film of Janosik was made with great help of Slovaks who lived in America. There
was a collection of money for the Tatra Film Corporaiton established by brothers Sinkel in 1920.
They collected about 16.000 USD and developed the project to make a film. The first Janosik in
film was Theodor Pistek and there were two versions of the film. American and Czecho-Slovak.
What is really interesting the American one ended with happy end while the other not. Mainly
there was created the love story with Janosik's girlfriend Anicka and depicted social oppression.
Believe or not, the Czecho-Slovak version dissapeared while the negative of American version was
found in 1970 in producer's garage. Film Labs Koliba in Bratislava copied 89000 cells of this
negative and make a sound to it. Well, premiere of this film was in 1921 in Zilina, Praha and Chicago.
Nowadays, this film is available with US subtitles at every Slovak Embassy and you can find it in more
than 80 countries in the film archives. The story and the whoel film is a bit plain but it has really great
cultural value and in 1995 UNESCO inserted it to the World Cultural Heritage as a markable piece of
    cinematographic history.
Meanwhile there was aim of Karol Plicka (scholar and folklorist) to make a true picture of Janosik in cinema
and he tried to set it up on the romanticist Jan Botto's poem "Death of Janosik" but he wasn't able to collect
enough money for it. But director Martin Fric (wellknown in Barrandov Studios Prague) collected enough in 1935
and made second film of Janosik where the main role got Palo Bielik, amateur actor found by Plicka. This version
of filmwas that successful that even now it is worth to see (not just because of Bielik's excellent look :))).
However it was also romantic story and idealised Janosik quite much. It got Film prize in 1936 and belonged to
Top 10 of foreign films in America.

Little cakes, cookies or strudeln, all these sweets are on our table in Christmas time. But I would like to mention some local customs that maybe more Slovaks don't do but I am used to it. There before this special dinner mentioned above, we save carp scute to the napkin for lucky and happy year, all dishes must be on the table, while you begin to eat you can't stand up and go away.. it brings bad luck. Before dinner there are prays and reading from the Bible ... so you can light candles, turn on the special music and Dobru chut (Bon appetite)...

    kubal's animation film
    by Skipka
Nevertheless, Palo Bielik as famous Janosik directed documentaries and later made third version of Janosik that was
filmed in Koliba Studios 1962-63 as 250. anniversary of Janosik's Death. This was finally a true legend, great historical
fresco partly action film. This version belongs to the treasures of Slovak cinematography.
Another treasure dealing with Janosik's theme is anime film of Viktor Kubal named "Zbojnik Jurko"(Padder Jurko). It depicts
realistic fairy tale :) social motifs but all with a great sense of humor. Kubal got many prizes for this film in e.g. in Teheran,
Montecatini, Gijone, Lyon etc... It is definitely the best animation film in Slovakia. Kubal also made a film of
Bloody Duchess of Cachtice, another great animation film.
The parody on Janosik was depicted in film Pacho, hybsky zbojnik, what is my favourite.

The most important day is 24th December when all Slovak families stick together and all members have a special supper. Supper usually consists of sauerkraut soup or fish soup without any piece of meat or sausage followed by fried carp and potatoe salad .. However this varies from town to town, somewhere they have poppy seeds dumplings (pupacky), baked carp etc. What is unique and united in the whole area are "oplatky". This very thin bisquit is made especially in before-Christmas-time and we eat it like dessert on this special evening. It is covered by honey, chopped garlic, apples and wallnuts. I love it very much. After the dinner we use to open gifts under the Christmas tree so children in Slovakia can sleep well that night :) They believe in little Jesus (Jezisko) not Santa Claus till they discover it is mom or dad preparing the gifts :) This situations shocks many children in the World, so do Slovak children :)... after this action we watch fairy tales or sing carrols, then go to church on Midnight's Mass.
