The wall hanging or rug is a Guba. It is a very old Slovak traditional natural handwoven woolen. They come in all designs and colors and shapes. Each a unique piece of art. I import them to the USA. The picture is of my Slovak friend and partner at an exhibit at The National Arts Club in NYC in March 2001 of the Guba and our photography of Slovakia. What an event. The friendliest people in Europe. They like to drink with their guests, don't be rude. There is a huge increase in local folk arts and crafts. You will find all sorts af fabulous handmade goods. Clothing, embroidery, lace, rugs, wooden carvings and so much more! Leave a Comment

This country has a long and interesting history. The Slavs controlled the middle ages, then a tour around this small country will show you what happened. Leave a Comment

As I've said before, Slovaks are amazing people, very warm, open and generous. When people you don't know ask you for a cigarette on the street, they'll want to give you some change in return. This happened to me a couple of times, but the last time, when I was sitting in front of Bratislava's main train station waiting for a train to Katowice in Poland, I explained to them (it were two guys) I couldn't do anything with their money as I was leaving the country. They insisted in paying me though, so finally they got me a cup of coffee :) Then (I still had to wait some time before my train arrived) I shared some of my vodca with them, in return for which they bought me beer. They never treat you like a rich tourist :) Leave a Comment

I found that Slovaks were not keen on direct eye contact with strangers. I tend to meet people with straight on gaze and that seems a bit off putting. Probably not just in Slovakia, but it is where I noticed it most. Also, take your shoes off when you enter someone's home. And if you bring flowers, bring an odd number! It is bad luck to bring an even number. Stores close at noon on Saturday and are not open at all on Sundays. I like this tradition, but it does take planning.

Visit, decently dressed, some of the very old cloisters where the atmosphere breathes peace and rest, ideal for some meditative thinking! The nuns will welcome you friendly and hospitably. Take your time to take it all in, it is worthwhile. No photos, however, not allowed. They don't want any disturbance of the quiet of their lives, and right they are. Leave a Comment

Well, I guess the different types of Skoda's driving around here can be considered to be culture! Very nice old examples... Leave a Comment

Most younger generations speak fluent, or near fluent, English. Most if not all the population speak more than their native tongue. They are also very traditionalistic and proud, as they should. Once introductions are made, they are going to be one of the nicest people you'll ever meet! Leave a Comment
