Alcohol and Driving

by Vlasta

Take note that Slovakia´s legal blood-alcohol limit is 0,0. Drinking and driving is an especially bad idea here. Keep your driver´s license and papers handy at all times. The fine for speeding is 1000 Sk (25 USD) on the spot and seat belts are compulsory. Do not be surprised if the police levy a "fine" without writing a ticket. They are horribly underpaid and always looking for ways to compensate.

napad jednej ucitelky

by renuschka

Mohyla M.R.Stefanika - Bradlo

by renuschka

K motorke pomaly zacali pribudat auticka z medzivojnoveho obdobia a z uplneho zaciatku 20. storocia. Putovali do Brezovej, kde vyvrcholenim prehliadky bolo starodavne hasicske auto a pokracovali k Mohyle M.R.Stefanika polozit kyticu kvetov a uctit si aspon takto pamiatku jedneho z najvacsich Slovakov.

Ktovie kde by bolo teraz byvalo Slovensko keby ...

by richmors

Antol is a little village near Banska Stiavnica. The surroundings are beautiful with the Stiavnica mountais and the varied nature. The castle there is build in 1750 and the owner was the ancient family of Coburg. Nowadays the huntinglodge is changed into a museum with hunting trophies of all sorts of animals living is this region, and with the original old furniture, clothes, paintings, etc. During the summer there are many activities. Famous is the St. Hubert-celebration in the first week of september.

If you don't know any Slovak,...

by MetalChicken

If you don't know any Slovak, then at least brush up on your German. Many restaurant menus will come in Slovak or German varieties and lots of people speak German as their second language. English is not widely spoken although that may well change in years to come. Eat early! Especially in smaller towns, restaurants will be closing their kitchens by 9pm.

when you queu at the bus stop,...

by poho

when you queu at the bus stop, and you are used to the nice english type queuing, you may get a fit of anger soon. we really ARE bad in queuing. i am afraid we jump the queu, we use our elbows, we are rude, just imagine a bunch of people desperately longing to get on that bus. this is for the local buses. if you travel on a long distance bus, this queuing problem of ours does not apply. we behave as human beings then.

by poho

i am sorry, we have running water and electricity. so to discover this kind of savage world you would have to find another country. in the mountains though, there are CHATAs /read 'khata'/ or cottages that have a fireplace and a near stream as the basic facilities. you won't find them in the tourist catalogues, so don't panic! we are not that bad as i am sarcastic

what about the confusing use...

by poho

what about the confusing use of prosim and dakujem? so... PROSIM=please, and DAKUJEM=thank you. basically. in a shop or bar you can be asked prosim, meaning can i help you? then you say 2 cokes prosim, meaning 2 cokes please. then they serve you and they say prosim, meaning here you are.you say dakujem, meaning thank you. they say prosim, meaning you are welcome. then you pay, saying prosim and they say dakujem. and they give you back the change, saying prosim. and you thank them of course. and they say prosim. thats all. just in case you would get frustrated by the lot of prosims
