we like to stuff as much food into visitors as we can, so be prepared to eat a lot on every visit. i mean... people like to see you like their dishes, so they would give you another portion and another, whether you want it or not. especially grandmasthey do make exceedingly good cakes though

some american girls expressed their suprise when they experienced that slovak men are not so touchy about walking around in their underpants (or whatever you call it) at home. well i must warn those who go to see families, that e. g. my father doesnt bother changing his clothes in the hall if necessary (which is as he works outside all day) and sometimes walks the walk of fame showing of his belly through the house. reportedly, this is quite common. but they are just as decent half naked as you fully dressed! the ladies can be seen busy in their little gardens in bikinis sometimes but this is fading, we pay money to go on holiday and get sunburned there

this is a slovak id, everybody over 15 in slovakia should have one. if you are a foreigner staying in slovakia for longer to work here, you will probably get one too. this id card is the one you should show to the police if they stop you. or your passport of course

pictue:Demanovska cave The spoken language is Slovakian and the main touristy language is German. You'll find English speaking people only at the main spots dealing with tourists, like travel agency, bank. Sometimes Russian language goes too, but the main for tourism is German. Highly recommend visiting this site and travel through all the info and links: http://www.tanap.sk/

Toast with Slivovice!

by catdockev

The wall hanging or rug is a Guba. It is a very old Slovak traditional natural handwoven woolen. They come in all designs and colors and shapes. Each a unique piece of art. I import them to the USA. The picture is of my Slovak friend and partner at an exhibit at The National Arts Club in NYC in March 2001 of the Guba and our photography of Slovakia. What an event. The friendliest people in Europe. They like to drink with their guests, don't be rude. There is a huge increase in local folk arts and crafts. You will find all sorts af fabulous handmade goods. Clothing, embroidery, lace, rugs, wooden carvings and so much more!

by Zmrzlina

I found that Slovaks were not keen on direct eye contact with strangers. I tend to meet people with straight on gaze and that seems a bit off putting. Probably not just in Slovakia, but it is where I noticed it most. Also, take your shoes off when you enter someone's home. And if you bring flowers, bring an odd number! It is bad luck to bring an even number. Stores close at noon on Saturday and are not open at all on Sundays. I like this tradition, but it does take planning.

by seraphim

As I've said before, Slovaks are amazing people, very warm, open and generous. When people you don't know ask you for a cigarette on the street, they'll want to give you some change in return. This happened to me a couple of times, but the last time, when I was sitting in front of Bratislava's main train station waiting for a train to Katowice in Poland, I explained to them (it were two guys) I couldn't do anything with their money as I was leaving the country. They insisted in paying me though, so finally they got me a cup of coffee :) Then (I still had to wait some time before my train arrived) I shared some of my vodca with them, in return for which they bought me beer. They never treat you like a rich tourist :)

Visit, decently dressed, some of the very old cloisters where the atmosphere breathes peace and rest, ideal for some meditative thinking! The nuns will welcome you friendly and hospitably. Take your time to take it all in, it is worthwhile. No photos, however, not allowed. They don't want any disturbance of the quiet of their lives, and right they are.
