Penzion Timea: Great partying!

by matcrazy1

My nightlife in Slovakia? OK, just a few possibilities, I enjoyed a lot:1. partying with friends (Polish friends) in Penzion Timea with a lot of beer (bought in advance in local grocery) and this small pig on my picture :-),2. meeting locals and drinking beer and/or (better OR) spirits (Borovicka) with them in local pubs/bars called "hostinec" - singing songs together :-),3. meeting people (Slovak, and mainly Polish and Czech visitors) in dining room of my pension,4. eating dinner in a restaurant,5. sleeping :-))).I was told that there were more possibilities (discos, night clubs) in larger cities, esp. in Bratislava and other university centers. At places I enjoyed always casual dress: that was jeans, T-shirt, trainers or so.

The Kelt Cafe: A Quiet Place for a Drink

by Paul2001

Levoca is a little place and to be honest there is not much here for the tourist crowd after dark. There are a couple of bars in town that seem to catter to the locals just learning how to drink but little that might appeal to "grown up" people. I did happen upon this place well out for a walk. Thankfully it was just 300m from my hotel so it was easy to find. The Kelt is just your standard cafe that plays light rock on the speaker system and welcomes people of all ages. There were actually some English tourists here in my age group so you will not feel uncomfortable wandering and feeling out of place.

The Dubliner in Bratislava: Another Irish Pub but a good one

by Paul2001

To be honest I was not over impressed by Bratislava's nightlife. I did not find all that much going on, even for a weekend. I did take in the Dubliner, another of a chain of pubs scattered across Europe. The bar was pretty big with long bar. Unlike some other spots in Bratislava, I did not think that they overcharged on beer here. There was a live band here during my visit and to be honest they were awful. The Dubliner serves the usual pub food that you find in such places.

Slovak Koliba: Gypsy Musicians

by Sue08080

High in the Tatry Mountains you can find small shepherd's huts filled with people enjoying themselves. Stop in for good food and drink and fine gypsy music. These musicians played everything from Broadway tunes to Hava Nagila.

Cousin's House: The Original Home Entertainment Center

by lmkluque

At the dining room table with family all round discussing many things, especially the differences between Slovak life and life in the USA.Traditional Slovakian Songs spontaneously burst forth and I am educated about the Traditional Songs of my ancestral village. Followed by a piano concert filling the evening with music and laughter. With all the changes made in Slovakia since the Velvet Revolution there are lots of night spots to be found, espscially in the larger cities such as Bratislava and Kosice, however if you recieve an invitation to someone's home for an evening, I advise accepting. The experience will be enlightening and worth remembering.

HOME: Nightlife in Slovakia is always fun!

by lmkluque

Any home can be instantly turned into a cabaret when a Cousin begins playing the piano, the whole family bursts into song and Aunt and Uncle get up and start dancing with each other.Imagine the shock. We're all sitting around the dining room table chatting after a lovely dinner, me in English and everyone else, except my semi-English speaking cousin, in Slovak. A simple lull in the conversation and suddenly they all, simultaneously, burst into rousing song! This would never have happened with my aunts and uncles in Montana, even after hours of drinking rum and brandy. I never learned what brought on the boisterous cheer, but it was enchanting. After a few selections they told me they had been singing traditional national songs. We have them too in the USA so I understood and appreciated their sharing. However, I became more intrigued to find out that they also had traditional Vlachovo...

The subject of 'Tipping'

by Matjik

Be discreet!Tips are appreciated but be wary not to go overboard. We where in a pub one night and I decided to buy a few round of drinks for everyone. For a party of 11 it cost +/- sk400 (approx. 11 USD). Thinking in the States, if I did the same thing for the same number of people, I'm easily out 50-60 bucks + tip...so I appreciatively AND unknowingly started tipping sk150 (4 USD..trying to round off to $15/serving - still a deal to me). well, after two or three times, it actually created an uncomfortable situation. So please be cautious in over doing your 'appreciation'.

all in Bratislava Center: From pub to pub in Bratislava...

by LucioFulci

Bratislava has a great nightlife. You can go from pub to pub, cafe to cafe, sit on tables on the street, drink and have fun. There is one particular pub wich I really enjoyed with some heavy rock, where most people were dressed in black, and it had it's wall filled with pics from great hardrock bands, like Led Zeppelin. There was another one, Papparazzi, I think, which had one of the most beatyful woman serving drinks. Anywhere you go, you'll have fun! Dress as will...
