WANDERING< CLIMBING< BREATHING< SEEING

by Amelei

If you like the outdoors, if you love climbing, sweating, aching, hurting like nothing else, then by all means Slovakia is one place you should explore. It has some spectacular country side, beautiful mountains, forests, waterfalls ect . For something a little different you could try it in winter, like my friend lucy here or you could be smart like me and choose your seasons wisely. Either way you will not be devoid of a wonderful time, especially after 8 hrs of climbing in snow and then stumbling across a small cabin with an open fireplace and warm Goulash.

The great outdoors......

by Amelei

Slovakia is so full on off the beaten path activities. If you love or simply appreciate the outdoors, you will enjoy Slovakia. Primarily Slovakia is a very poor country. I witnessed so many gypsies and homeless people there. From a foreign point of view i found this distressing to some degree. The shops are old and tattered, the buildings a relic of the old. In saying this though, Slovakia is a proud country and is begining to find its feet. It boasts beautiful landscapes both dramatic and surreal. Some of the forests there are breathtaking. I spent a week in Hitatrus climbing ridges, gullies, mountain peaks, valleys and so on.... It was the hardest part of my eastern European trip but i am so glad i went back to my roots- the medival forests. One week was spent in bliss and tears. I have never climbed so hard in my life. It was all up. By the third day, i was overwhelmingly exhausted....

For a stroll through the last century, visit this open air musuem filled with buildings comprising a typical Slovak village. Walk through a church, school and home of this earlier time. See my separate travelogue below for more photos.

Paying Respect Slovak Style!

by lmkluque

Cemeteries play a big part in genealogical research. Also, they are pretty well visited by the survivors of loved ones even long after the funeral. Especially in parts of the world where political activities create traumatic change, the cemetery seems to be left unchanged. If you are searching your family history, or have relatives who have died in Slovakia, consider a visit to the cemetery to gain more knowledge. What was "different" in these cemeteries from my experience is that fact that each family had the responsibility of the grave site of their loved ones.At the village cemetery where my Great Grandmother and Great-Great Grandmother had been buried, my relatives guided me through a ritual of cleaning up around the plot of land putting out fresh flowers and lighting candles at each grave. I don't know that all Slovaks do this but it was apparent that this ritual had been done not...

Blink and you will miss Vlachovo

by lmkluque

Vlachovo is not a big city and most visitors to Slovakia will miss visiting Vlachovo. The vacation traveler may not consider stopping in a place like Vlachovo, no matter how I present it. However, there are many people who have an interest in their genealogy and will want to travel to the recently opened Eastern European countries. In the past hundred years, or so, there have been many political boundry changes and many towns have changed their name making a search confusing and misleading. It is with those people in mind that I will build a Vlachovo page.

Visit Kremnica

by zaffaran

Kremnica is a very nice and not very big town, which is not covered in crowds of tourists.Located in Kremnicke Vrchy has got some places worth visiting. The first very special thing is a slanting market square covered in grass with a rich sculptured column. You can visit a museum of coins and medals- Kremnica used to be famous as a royal mint (funded in 1328 and working up to now). There is also a castle with St. Catherine church (fabulous organs!)Fancy some outdoor activity?Thermal swimming pools are waiting for you!Skiing in winter?Krahule(a few km north) provide quite good ski service.

Beautiful country from towns to mountains

by Jossan

Slovakia is an easily forgotten destination when you travel Europe, but here you have all the beauty of central Europe. And the low prices let's you afford seeing and doing everything. I especially recommend Presov where we spent a few days. Great cafées, bars and ice-cream places, and so close to castle ruins and a beatiful landscape.

Kosice side streets (3)

by ChrisAlexander

Perhaps my favourite street leading off Hlavna. I like the building in the left of the picture and the church at the end of the street. When it rains heavily the rain will pour down from the gutters along the rooftops of this street like a waterfall.

Hot Springs

by Keirle

I don't know how 'off the beaten path' it is, but it's always nice to endulge in a little heated outdoors hydrotherapy. There is a place called Beszanova (Slovak spelling is a little strange and this keyboard doesn't have all the correct strokey/accenty things) on the way to the little Tatras. It's on the way to Hotop and other ski areas in the region. Sit back, grab a beer and relax. I still think the hotsprings in thailand are better, but then, motherearth provides a more interesting and bountiful herbal infusion than tea, to assist in your relaxation endeavours.

Hidden Beauty

by Skipka

The castle Cerveny Kamen (or Red Stone) is unique site to visit and it is hidden on the way from Bratislava to Trnava (not by highway). It is quite big complex and you can find there many interesting views. First, there is a great museum and a little cave-like chapel, large cellars and in the summer also falconery show. For those who have heard about films of Princess Fanthagiro, the cellars will be quite familiar. Gotcha, it was filmed here and in Bojnice Chateau. Both sites were owned by the family of Palffy. See my site of Cerveny Kamen
