Nepomuceny

by matcrazy1

I found a lot of old sculptures/statues of St. Nepomucen driving around Slovakia. They were called "nepomuceny". You can find them in Poland and in Prague, Czech as well - on Karl Bridge for example. The stone figure of St. John Nepomucen - on my picture - with two angels standed on a stone post on the left side of the trail to the Orava castle in Oravsky Podzamok. It looked old and interesting for me. There is an interesting story of the saint St. Nepomucen: John Nepomucen was born at Nepomuk, Bohemia (Czech), 1340; studied, lived and died in Prague in 1393; canonized in 1729. He became involved in a dispute between Czech King Wenceslaus IV and the archbishop of Prague. He supported the archbishop. At a meeting with John and other clerics, Wenceslaus flew into a rage, tortured them so that John was seriously injured, and then had him murdered and thrown into the Moldau River at Prague.I...

Monuments of slavery

by matcrazy1

In contrast to Poland there are still - although few - monuments typical to Stalin era to be found in Slovakia. There were very, very many huge monuments built in each city, in many villages or just along a highway in Czechoslovakia under communist regime after WWII. They usually showed statues of workers, various communist so called "heroes" (like Lenin, Marks and Engels) or they symbolized never-ending friendship with the Soviet Union and Soviet Union Communist Party. They surely all survived till communism collapse in 1989, so I could see them personally. I had never seen so many of them in Poland. Hmm... they symbolized lack of freedom for me, I didn't like them a lot and therefore I never took a picture of them.I was badly surprised seeing a few of them in middle 90'. Hmm... no money to put them to the museum of communism (is there any in Slovakia?) or to destroy them like it...

by matozbb

There are many more places that are hidden than the popular ones. And in my opinion they are quite often more charming, clean, quiet... My favourite ones are in Slovenske Rudohorie, Cerova Vrchovina, Kermnicke Vrchy, Kysuce, Orava and many more.

hiking in the Tatras

by Polska

As the subject is sort of wide, I'll describe 2 of my favourite routes.So:1. VYSOKE TATRYstart: Stary Smokovec- Sliezsky Dom (hut)- Velicke pleso (1663)- Olhe pleso (1929)- Prielom (Rohatka, 2288)- Zbojnicka Chata (hut)- Sive pleso (2011)- Priecne sedlo (2352); from there either: a) Teryho Chata (hut, 2200), then down the valley (Mala Studena Dolina) - Bilikova chata (hut) - Smokovec, or: b) Sedielko (2372), then all the way down to Javorina (through Javorova valley, but that's a longer route);Taking this route is you can see most of the Vysoke Tatry, including Gerlachovsky (the way up, on your left), Lomnicky (2632), Pysny (2623), Baranie rohy (2526) and Ladovy Stit (2627).Of course, you can start from the other side too, but in that case have to climb up a vertical rock at Priecne sedlo (there's a chain). You can do all the route within one day, in case the weather gets bad you can try...

great hiking paths in slovakia

by kalin

there are a lot of great hiking paths near strbske pleso for example. different routs are with different difficulty. But the views from some points are spectacular, especially on the way to the top of Krivan. and the hiking paths are not worth going just near strbske pleso, but you can find them all over high tatras and the Tatra National park.

Devin is a short bus ride out of Bratislava but well worth a visit. A spectacular ruined castle perches on a mountain where a large tributary joins the Danube. There are several barbeque style restaurants serving wonderful grilled fish for incredibly cheap prices. Makes a great day out.

Banska Stiavnica (11.000inh.)is a nice town with fantastic surroundings with lovely situated churches overlooking the town. Don't forget to visit the Slovenské Banské Muzeum: mines for gold and silver, copper, lead, and zinc. You can go into the mine with guides. The hotels, pensions, hostels are friendly.

by Wiktoria

Lesnica. A small picturesque village in the Pieniny Mountains. Lesnica is inhabited by around 500 residents. The town was very cute. When you walk from the direction of the Polish border all the store signs are in Polish (there are many Polish tourist hiking from Szczawnica or Pieniny Mountains in general). When you walk back all the signs (basically on the other side of the sign) are in Slovakian. I guess it's a good marketing idea!
