There are many well trodden paths to follow in the mountains, but that's not to say you'll have to compete with crowds,there's plenty of space to find your own path.

Spisskie Podhradie - a small, nice town not far from Poprad, with amazing castle and huge medieval cathedral nearby - and almost untouched since the time of K.u.K. empire. Great place to go!
