Favorite thing: I saw beautiful, tiny, small houses (sometimes a little neglected) roofed with red ceramic tiles in Oravsky Podzamok. But I saw ugly buldings as well. I didn't like especially too massive, cube-shape with flat roof houses like this white one on my picture with almost no windows on its wall - looked like a jail hehe.
I think they were designed and built after WWII as a typical "public" design of those times (who invented such architectural nightmares?) and not only in Oravsky Podzamok and Slovakia but in Poland and other countries under Soviet regime unfortunatelly as well.

Favorite thing: The oldest part of Orava Castle is located on the top of the rock and is called the Upper Castle or the Citadel. It looked impressive from the village down and it was partly open to the public.
The Citadel was built in the middle of 13th century at the place of wooden watch tower. Like most castles in northern Slovakia it was probably built after Tartarian invasion in 1241 as a watch fortress. Originally the base was made of stones wheras the upper parts were made of wood. This part of the castle consisted and still consists of vertical walls joined to the edges of steep rock which had to make the place very difficul to capture.

Favorite thing: This part of Orava castle was built later than the Upper Castle, at place of a few wooden houses located there as early as in 13th century. This part of the castle looked a little chaotic but lovely with its numerous towers, turrets and walls.
The middle part constisted of a mediaeval donjon (a square two-storied salvage tower) and two medieval palaces: Korvin's and Jan of Dubovec's 4-story palace.

Favorite thing: The youngest part of Orava Castle includes it's lower part (Lower Castle). From the outside it's the least interesting part of the castle in my opinion.
But interiors of this part are mostly open to the public, I mean Thurzo's palace, the castle chapel, the rectory and the archives tower.

Favorite thing: I didn't meet any wild boar walking around Oravsky Podzamok and climbing up the castle hill. But as I know there should be few in surrounding forests.
I saw only the leather of a wild boar hung on a wall inside Toliar restaurant.

Favorite thing: Hmm... maybe it should be off the beaten path tip. But I found this funny, wooden, sculptured bench on a lawn by the main beaten :-) tourist trail from a parking lot to the castle. Looking at the bench I thought about mysterious stone statues in... Easter Island :-). Don't they look similar?
Btw it was probably... the only bench I found in Oravsky Podzamok. If you want to sit down and rest you must go to a restaurant or a pub/bar.

I step on a raft from Horna Lehota and go down a river to Oravsky Podzamok. This river is Orava River. If a terminal becomes near, Orava Castle soars overhead. http://www.plte-orava.sk/
