English-Slovak Dictionary!

by lmkluque

Traveling by train is the easiest way so pack lite and bring only one suitcase that is easy to handle. If you plan on trekking up into the Tatras or visiting one of the many Spas, bring good walking shoes and warm clothes. Today the possibility of buying a language dictionary in your home country is better than at the time of my travels and I suggest you do so. If you, as I did, wait to buy the dictionary in Slovakia you might make the same mistake I did and buy one that will not be useful. When visiting the smaller villages, bring every thing you might need because there are no stores to buy supplies from. In the larger towns and big cities there should be no problem to replace necessary items.

Cigarettes and alcohol

by Keirle

If you're coming from Poland, stock up on cigarettes before you cross the border. Once you arrive, just so crazy on the alcohol consumption. The best buys, comparatively are:- whisky; and- absinth (which you can't get in Poland)

Fast changing weather

by matcrazy1

For walking around cities and towns, small, city backpack and surely bag for your camera - both water-proof. Comfortable walking shoes preferrably water-resistant: like good trainers or better special walking shoes (Danish Ecco are very comfortable and... expensive but worth the cost). Sun-glasses esp. in winter and summer and always a rain coat. Read info on climate in Slovakia:Climate of SlovakiaCheck weather (4-day forecast) for Slovakia (in Slovak language):Weather forecast for SlovakiaChoose your exact destination from the list! Buy toilet paper, soap (small bottle of liquid soap), paper towels or tissue papers. Usually available in public toilets (restrooms) but... not always. For pictures at night and bad light (weather) take a tripod. Small, light tent, gas cooker and eventually small gas lamp - available in local stores. Free camp sites were usually not lighted. Electrical adapter

by Matjik

Make sure that the adapter you bring is the 'B' adapters and not the 'A' adapter that's mostly used in western Europe. The 'B' adapter actually have a wider and thinner prongs. You can get a complete set of adapters and converters at Brookstone. They're even color coded according to the region/countries of your destination.

Customs restrictions

by Vlasta

Standard customs regulations apply for bringing items into Slovakia. This means that up to 200 cigarettes and 2 litres of alcohol are allowed. Bringing anything illegal across the border (think: drugs, wapons, kidnapped women) is never, ever a good idea. An import duty may be leveled if the value of goods being imported exceeds Sk 6.000,- (USD 130). Visitors are required to have at least the equivalent of USD 15 per day of the intended stay. There is no duty on exports. But refrain from stealing statues or paintings, as there is a law prohibiting the export of "cultural monuments, artifacts of museum and gallery value, as well as archive documents."

backpacks! of course depending on the time of year. spring summer autumn is the best for backpacking and hiking and such activities. be prepared to bring waterproof things that can keep you warm but also shorts and tshirts as it may turn very warm. in the summer some 35 C is all right. good hiking shoes or decent tennis shoes are fine plasters, for the blisters, and the standard stuff. some cream against mosquito bites if you are going near water and lakes.
