Poprad is probably best known for access to the Tatra Mountains but, just ouside the centre and now incorporated into the municipality, is Spišská Sobota, a small village (and conservation area). Burghers' houses surround an attractive square and the place has a charming central-European Baroque feel to it. Specific sights are limited but it does...more

Great restaurant, which is located near the main square of Poprad and right behind the church with the bell-tower.The food is very tasty and not expensive. Last year (June 2008) we had two soups (one bean and garlic with toasts) + two times "bryndzove haloushki" (type of boiled potato noodles with goat cheese and bacon) for less then 160 Slovak...more
This restaurant has a local country style interior and even features a fountain. They have a menu in other language but you have to ask for it. I don't remember what my dish was called and when it was served I wasn't too impressed with the runny sauce trying to escape the plate but it turned out to be absolutely delicious.more
The old center of Poprad is a very pleasant place for a stroll after sunset. I suggest that you eat in a restaurant there, take some picture before and later in the dark.
Poprad tatry station has a Left luggage office and a snack bar. Poprad is 332 km from Bratislava. and 220 km from Trencin and 110 km from Kosice. If you are a senior citizen check out the reduced fares for oldies on Slovakia trains.show your passport. I went from Poprad to Bratislava pensioners rate for 75 cents , YES, 332 km for less than a Euro....more
Going to the mountains you have the option to take a bus instead of the Tatra train. Coming back one day to Tatranska Lomnica we used the faster bus instead of the train. Part of the way the bus just run down a straight road which was quite a spectacle when sitting in the front. The main bus station in Poprad is next to the train station. And behind...more

When we were there at the end of May Poprad just had a visit from a wandering circus. During the day they had the camels outside which was very popular with the locals.
Not so much a danger as an annoyance.Poprad seems to have more than it's fare share of Romanys... and whilst I don't want to go into the wider politics involving romanys, they can spot a tourist a mile off in Poprad!I caught one guy's eye and he ran from a fair distance and followed me for a good while with his hand out shouting "Prosim?...more
Arrived at the train station without a good knowledge of where hotel (Penzion Lampass) was (only a minute walk away - across from Aqua City, a MAJOR tourist site). Jumped into unlicensed taxi for a 6 Euro ride (10 minutes, if that). A normal, licensed taxi, which there were many at the train station should have cost 2-3 Euro, if that. Always ask the locals, if you need to (I should have)
If you have the time while in Poprad, please take a day to enter Poland, it's only about 1 hour by car or bus. One place that one should go is Moskie Oko or Lake Moskie in the Tatras Mountain Range in south of Poland. We have to walk, or rather hike (but for disabled people, there would be a van to reach the lake on top of the mountain). From...more
Poprad is the ski gateway to the Slovak Tatras. There are many resorts nearby for example Stary Smokovec with good transport links.
We didn´t manage to visit the tourist office but it is located on Namestie sv. Egidia 15. We picked up a free map which pointed out a few places of interest in the hotel. The map is terribly basic though, so you may want to print out one from the internet beforehand like I did as our guide book about Slovakia didn´t have one either.
If you have time then you should also visit the part of town called "Spisska Sobota". Unfortuantely, we didn´t have time to do so this time.
