Poprad Things to Do

  • Stary Smokovec

Take the train from Poprad Tatry station to Stary Smokovec. This is part way up the Tatra mountains. From here you can take a funicular higher. Stary Smokovec is only 13 km from Poprad.

Poprad is probably best known for access to the Tatra Mountains but, just ouside the centre and now incorporated into the municipality, is Spišská Sobota, a small village (and conservation area). Burghers' houses surround an attractive square and the place has a charming central-European Baroque feel to it. Specific sights are limited but it does...

  • Great Tatran Food for small money!

Great restaurant, which is located near the main square of Poprad and right behind the church with the bell-tower.The food is very tasty and not expensive. Last year (June 2008) we had two soups (one bean and garlic with toasts) + two times "bryndzove haloushki" (type of boiled potato noodles with goat cheese and bacon) for less then 160 Slovak...

  • Slovenska Restauracia

This restaurant has a local country style interior and even features a fountain. They have a menu in other language but you have to ask for it. I don't remember what my dish was called and when it was served I wasn't too impressed with the runny sauce trying to escape the plate but it turned out to be absolutely delicious.

The old center of Poprad is a very pleasant place for a stroll after sunset. I suggest that you eat in a restaurant there, take some picture before and later in the dark.

Going to the mountains you have the option to take a bus instead of the Tatra train. Coming back one day to Tatranska Lomnica we used the faster bus instead of the train. Not so much a danger as an annoyance.Poprad seems to have more than it's fare share of Romanys... and whilst I don't want to go into the wider politics involving romanys, they can spot a tourist a mile off in Poprad!I caught one guy's eye and he ran from a fair distance and followed me for a good while with his hand out shouting "Prosim?...

From Poprad bus station, we can take buses to the Tatras Mountain Range in south of Poland, but please buy the ticket days ahead or rather get the ticket early in the morning. There are many people who use Poprad as their base to explore the Tatras Mountain in Poland.

Arrived at the train station without a good knowledge of where hotel (Penzion Lampass) was (only a minute walk away - across from Aqua City, a MAJOR tourist site). Jumped into unlicensed taxi for a 6 Euro ride (10 minutes, if that). A normal, licensed taxi, which there were many at the train station should have cost 2-3 Euro, if that. Always ask the locals, if you need to (I should have)

If you have the time while in Poprad, please take a day to enter Poland, it's only about 1 hour by car or bus. Favorite thing: We didn´t manage to visit the tourist office but it is located on Namestie sv. Egidia 15. We picked up a free map which pointed out a few places of interest in the hotel. The map is terribly basic though, so you may want to print out one from the internet beforehand like I did as our guide book about Slovakia didn´t have one either.

If you have time then you should also visit the part of town called "Spisska Sobota". Unfortuantely, we didn´t have time to do so this time.
