At the beginning of the 20th century there were memorial signs all over the Tatry mountains for the people who lost their lives in the area. It was considered psychologically bad to have those plates all over the place. The Tatra commission undertook it to concentrate all those memorial plates in a forest under Ostrva in the Mengusovska valley. On the cemetery you will find a memorial chapel and carved wooden Detva crosses. Once a year in late autumn a memorial service is held.

It's a short detour from the main "normal" hiking path to reach the cemetery. This path is considered a mountain path which is closed from 1.1.-15.6. Since the sign was only in Slovakian, we didn't understand it. After the visit of the symbolic cemetery continue that way to the lake. It's very beautiful that way.

From Popradske Pleso train station it's a one hour uphill hike to the lake. The path follows a forest road winding uphill. You will cross a mountain stream and pass a picnic hut. Shortly before you arrive at the lake, you can take a detour if you like to the symbolic cemetery.

This hike is very beautiful. It take you downhill again with some uphill bit along the way. The summer path follows some signposts about the nature (in Slovak only). You get stunning views on the first half, but you also need to have your wits with you as for a long stretch you walk on rocks, a few of them wobble. So, if you want to enjoy the view on that stretch you need to stop so that you don't stumble. The path then enters a forest and takes you down to Strbske Pleso where the path finishes near the lake. You follow the road for a very short bit and across the bridge.

The lake is a clear mountain lake with fish in it. You can take a walk around it. Where the water flows into and out of it there were lots of yellow flowers that like it damp. The scenery towards the mountains is spectacular.

One of the days exploring the High Tatry we spent on a hike which took about 3 hours. I would recommend doing this in the order we did it, so that you finish in Strbske Pleso with its cafes and...
