bluuueeee by Skipka As for the Bratislava page I must make a tip for this restaurant also herein general page of Slovakia. You see, it is maybe special but at first sight it should look dead :) no one at streets and no restaurant or pub on your way, especially in smaller towns, but be careful and have eyes wide opened for the little houses because inside there should be a great restaurant where old grandmother is cooking her dishes :) and on the walls you can see typical Slovak decorations. However, great experience after all those artificials and usual restaurants. Restaurant Modry dom offers specialities of the Western Slovakia such as roasted goose and "lokse" special pancakes, several kinds of meat-dishes and great fried icecream what isn't typical for Slovakia but also very delicious. It is situated on the suburb of the capital but really worth to visit to feel the special atmosphere of the country you should see from inside...
Favourite dish everywhere but especially in the High Tatras in this kind of restaurants is menu consisted of chicken or hen soup with handmade pasta or garlic soup ( I think you will eat it during the whole stay here) and then some Slovak speciality like dumplings with the BRYNDZA (we got the trade mark in the whole EU for this cheese-like delicattesse :)) or pancake made of the potatoes or simply whatever what is on the menu :) Enjoy and Dobru chut ! HOSTINEC IN ORAVSKY PODZAMOK by matcrazy1 Hmm... it was not so easy to find good restaurant with good food in Slovakia. At least it was always more difficult for me than in both Poland and Czech. And the choice was very limited, I mean not many non-Slovak food restaurants to choose from, maybe except Bratislava and pizzerias. Except larger cities it's often difficult to find anything more than local, countryside "hostinec" with only local spirits and beer served. Additionaly I found restaurants in smaller towns often closed in the evenings. They were hired by natives for parties. Luckily restaurants in hotels (2-3 stars) were opened till 10pm, but food was usually served till 9pm there. My classificasion of places to eat/drink in Slovakia: Restauracia = restaurant, Jedalne = dining-room, "eating-house", Koliba = local restaurant, inn (sometimes not so local in real), Lahodka, bistro = fast food bar, Pizzeria = pizzeria, Vinaren = wine house, Cukraren = pastry house, Hostinec = local, Slovak pub/bar. I usually chose either just restaurant or "hostinec". Hmm... restaurants offered quite often not the best food, I think. But sometimes... I was surprized. HOSTINEC was the best place to meet natives and drink beer (or spirits) with them. Usually there was no food available there although sometimes very limited choice of - usually very local and good - food was served. Usually there was a lot of cigarette smoke inside loud hostinec. A few times I met groups of a little drunk Slovaks singing local songs, sometimes with words not for children in hostinec.
Reasonable prices. For soup, main course and dessert + drink/beer: 100 - 200 Sk per person in inexpensive restaurant (= 2.57 - 5.14 Euro or $3.25 - $6.50), 200 - 400 Sk per person in good restaurant (= 5.14 - 10.28 Euro or $6.50 - $13.00). Leave a Comment

Traditional Slovak gastronomy reflects the time and the environment in which it was being made. Its basic ingredients are potatoes, cereals, cabbage, meat and milk, especially sheep's milk, as well as products made from it. They have achieved the greatest popularity in the form of unique Slovak bryndza. It is exported not just to Vienna but also to Switzerland, cheese superpower. Smoked oštiepky, parenice and cheese 'whips' are very popular. Potato dishes include mashed potatoes with smoked bacon, potato-based halušky and pirohy with bryndza. Among meat dishes there are fried liver, special kettle guľáš (gulash) and fried lamb. In the south the cuisine is characterized by chicken, prepared in different ways. Roast goose with potato pancakes is very popular. There are also fish dishes, spicy guľáš soups, influenced by Hungarian cuisine. In the eastern parts of the country, pork steak with home-made sausages are typical. These meals are available on menus in specialized canteens and restaurants - cottages or motorests. All restaurants of higher categories offer them. Vodka and medovina are traditional alcoholic drinks. Plum brandy, called slivovica and borovička, as well as herb liqueurs are very popular. Brand Slovak wines, ranging from Small Carpathian to Tokay in the East are very popular. For non-alcoholic drinks, sour milk and žinčica - a drink from sheep's milk, are widely consumed Leave a Comment Theme: Other

A very nice restaurant in the city centre, we rushed to the table on the balcony, so we didn't see if the interior was big. Efficient staff and yummy food (decent portions) . Nice tables behind the flowers. Not expensive. There's also a guest-house in the same building (penzion)
Oh, I really don't remember what we ordered but it tasted really very good. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Akademicka 4Directions: The city centre is rather small and you will find the restaurant easily!

When you are in Bardejov and you have just had your breakfast in lahodky it's a good idea to have some coffee and freshly baked cake.
My absolute must is always a piece (sometimes 2 pieces!) of "strudel" ; it's a kind of cake with apples.DELICIOUS! Leave a Comment Theme: DessertPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageDirections: A Market Square in Bardejov

by zaffaran Recommending LAHODKY I don't mean a particular restaurant or cafe, this is a kind of shop which can be found in every even small town. There one can have different types of salads, freshly made sandwiches, very often cakes and drinks and everything is at reasonable prices.
My favourite dish is egg salad and ham in jelly. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveAddress: in every town

CHICKEN BREASTS IN MUSHROOMS WITH ROASTED POTATOES by matcrazy1 Traditional Slovak food was available in this restaurant in Oravsky Podzamok. We ate lunch there in September 2003, hmm... not the best to be honest.
The Slovak diet relies mainly on pork. I found Slovak cuisine quite good and more spicy than Czech or Polish one. Various kinds of roasted meat dominated. The most popular traditional dishes were: 1. BRYNZOVE HALUSKY - a serving of dumplings with melted sheep cheese and fried bacon sprinkled on the top. It's the national dish of Slovak Republic and it is usually the least expensive menu item. Sometimes, for some reason, they were listed in... the dessert section. 2. STARPACKY S KAPUSTOU - dumplings with cabbage and sometimes bacon. 3. BRAVCOVY REZEN - breaded and fried pork steak, 4. GULAS - Goulash (originally Hungarian dish, I mean Segedinsky gulas) 5. PALACINKY - crepe pancakes filled with jam. Other dishes we ordered in the above restaurant: - grilovany morcaci rezen - grilled steak or rather chop made of duck meat - hmm... don't order it there, - Kuracie prsia na sampinonoch - chicken breasts in (forest) mushrooms - quite good but served with not good sauce, - Zemiaky v supke - roasted potatoes - delictious, my recommedation. ZLATY BAZANT (GOLDEN PHEASANT) BEER LOGO by matcrazy1 Kathy and Urszula (I was a driver) tasted the beer in Toliar Restaurant in Oravsky Podzamok and they told it was good :-). WHERE TO DRINK BEER? To taste beer in Slovakia chose a pub/bar crowded with natives or even tourists drinking beer just to be more sure that the beer served is fresh (from a new barrel). Hmm... I think that sometimes the owners of pubs try to save some money and don't store the beer at night in appropriate temperature. Beer was always the best in crowded local "Hostinec" a kind of pub which sometimes served limited choice of local, cheap but usually very good food.
Don't miss delicious although cheap Slovak beer, if you drink beer of course. We bought and drank mainly Zlaty Bazant (Golden Pheasant) beer because it was the best Slovak beer in our opinion. That beer tasted good in my opinion although nothing compare to Polish Tyskie and Zywiec hehe. SLOVAK BEER BRANDS - Zlaty Bazant (9 or harder 12) - the best Slovak beer in my opinion, - Urpin - a little worse and... more expensive, - Saris - not my favourite, - Tatran - numbered brands 10, 11, 12, 16 (larger number means more alcohol) - sometimes tasted delicious, sometimes hmm... not fresh or not well stored probably, - Corgon - not my favourite, - Martiner Pils - quite good beer, - Topvar - a few brands numbered from 7.5 to 12, sometimes very good, sometimes... not. HOW MUCH IS BEER IN SLOVAKIA Zlaty Bazant 12 beer in Restaurant Toliar: small glass = 0.3 l for (10.14 oz) 15.00 Sk that was $0.42, 0.35 euro or 1.58 zl. large glass = 0.5 l (16.91oz) for 25.00 Sk that was $0.69, 0.58 euro or 2.64 zl. Zlaty Bazant beer 12 in local grocery: One bottle (0,5 l = 16,91 oz) of Zlaty Bazant 12 (there was 9, softer beer as well) costed 16 Sk = $0.44 = 0.37 euro = 1.69 zl.
