KAPUSTNICA: Don't miss special Xmas and New Year's Soup

by Skipka

Kapustnica is a great soup (pretty strongly smelling everywhere :)) made of sauerkraut, sausages, smoked bacon, smoked meat, mushrooms, dried plums and a lot of other ingredients that can vary from house to house. :) However, the base is sauerkraut and when there is kapustnica it means the Cristmas is coming or New Year's Eve. Difference between these two variants is that kapustnica for Christmas is without meat or bacon. :) So it is why I love that one for N.Y. Eve.

As for the Bratislava page I must make a tip for this restaurant also herein general page of Slovakia. You see, it is maybe special but at first sight it should look dead :) no one at streets and no restaurant or pub on your way, especially in smaller towns, but be careful and have eyes wide opened for the little houses because inside there should be a great restaurant where old grandmother is cooking her dishes :) and on the walls you can see typical Slovak decorations. However, great experience after all those artificials and usual restaurants. Restaurant Modry dom offers specialities of the Western Slovakia such as roasted goose and "lokse" special pancakes, several kinds of meat-dishes and great fried icecream what isn't typical for Slovakia but also very delicious. It is situated on the suburb of the capital but really worth to visit to feel the special atmosphere of the country you...

Restaurant Toliar: Slovak beer - Zlaty Bazant :-)

by matcrazy1

Kathy and Urszula (I was a driver) tasted the beer in Toliar Restaurant in Oravsky Podzamok and they told it was good :-).WHERE TO DRINK BEER?To taste beer in Slovakia chose a pub/bar crowded with natives or even tourists drinking beer just to be more sure that the beer served is fresh (from a new barrel). Hmm... I think that sometimes the owners of pubs try to save some money and don't store the beer at night in appropriate temperature.Beer was always the best in crowded local "Hostinec" a kind of pub which sometimes served limited choice of local, cheap but usually very good food. Don't miss delicious although cheap Slovak beer, if you drink beer of course. We bought and drank mainly Zlaty Bazant (Golden Pheasant) beer because it was the best Slovak beer in our opinion. That beer tasted good in my opinion although nothing compare to Polish Tyskie and Zywiec hehe.SLOVAK BEER BRANDS-...

very good jednym z najznamejsich slovenskych jedal su bryndzove halusky.

Cafe Mayor: Coffeeshop

This is a coffee shop on Main Square. Does great cakes. Its just like an Austrian coffeeshop but cheaper You can buy a coffee in a nice mug and you keep the mug afterwards. Makes a good present ;-) Any of the cakes. I like the blackcurrent cheescake thing.

any: Too many FastFood (Bratislava)

by LucioFulci

On the first day we didn't found any local food restaurant. We even asked some policemen for it and they were intrigued (they were eating an hamburguer). We thought there weren't actually any local food rest, only fast food, so we ate on some italian rest where we were badly received. On the next day we gave a try on the center and more expensive touristy restaurants, to find they weren't so expensive for an interrailler and where we could find great local food for little over €6... I ate a fried cheese wich was very strong but very good. I though my liver would blow just on the first bite. My friend ate some fried mushrooms with some cheese and garlic sauce wich were also very tasteful. We then ate some steaks wich were god's delight!

Sidewalk cafes: Most of the food is quite German in flavor.

by randi413

Nearly any sidewalk cafe is good. We tried several and found them all to be quite satisfying. Most of the food was typcially German, and since we like German food, we were happy! Service was very good, very courteous, no tipping expected, though when we did tip, they were most appreciative. Staff was very helpful with explanations and suggestions. All very inexpensive. I had an amazing schnitzel with a light noodle dish, and my husband had grilled tuna that was perfect. This was at a sidewalk cafe near Tesco's in Bratislava.

mihal's Restaurant Tip

Traditional Slovak gastronomy reflects the time and the environment in which it was being made. Its basic ingredients are potatoes, cereals, cabbage, meat and milk, especially sheep's milk, as well as products made from it. They have achieved the greatest popularity in the form of unique Slovak bryndza. It is exported not just to Vienna but also to Switzerland, cheese superpower. Smoked oštiepky, parenice and cheese 'whips' are very popular. Potato dishes include mashed potatoes with smoked bacon, potato-based halušky and pirohy with bryndza. Among meat dishes there are fried liver, special kettle gu¾áš (gulash) and fried lamb. In the south the cuisine is characterized by chicken, prepared in different ways. Roast goose with potato pancakes is very popular. There are also fish dishes, spicy gu¾áš soups, influenced by Hungarian cuisine. In the eastern parts of the country, pork steak...

When in Nitra, try a slice of pizza in the square at the top of Stefanikova Trieda - lovely atmosphere. The traditional dish, Halusky, is well worth a try. Potato dumplings served with cheese and traditionally topped with cooked bacon rind.
