Smolenice Things to Do

  • Conference

At a scientific and technical conference, there are presentations (picture 1), which, whatever interesting they are, are not the only thing to do; I enjoyed a lot the breaks between the presentations and speeches, and even more the time before dinner, on the terrace with colleagues having some beer or telling stories about some subjects which take...

  • Molpír Fortified Settlement

On Molpir Hill, at walking distance from the village are the remains of a Hallstatt period settlement.Remains of fortifications, two castles, an acropolis from the 6-7th centuries BC, etc, can be examined with a few explanatory boards about these ruins. It is not very spectacular, but it is a rare thing to see remains from that period, at the...

  • Woods, mobile homes. . . . old homes. ....

The Malé Karpaty mountains have some remote places where you can make some strange or funny discoveries; in some small valley you can come across a strange mobile home next to a pond (picture 2) after having walked up a small road traversing a beautiful hornbeam forest (main picture); the atmosphere was still at winter but courageous coltsfoot...

  • Chemin de croix

Between the castle and the village, well hidden in the forest is a small chapel, on top of a knoll; the small track leading from the village cemetery to the chapel is also a way of the cross, with its 14 stations. It was not far from Easter when I was there, and of course, a way of cross has more significance at that time but the occasional visitor...

  • Enjoyable bird watching (and listening!)

In the park and the woods next to the castle, you cannot miss the birdlife; The birds awake you early morning with their songs and calls from the trees and you want to see who is awaking you; not singing, but drumming enthusiastically, the spotted woodpecker (picture 1) can be . . . . spotted ( ! ) easily if you walk quietly, looking for the origin...

  • Music and dance

When you stay in a lost place in remote mountains, you may enjoy some entertainment for the evenings; the colleagues from the University of Bratislava, not only organised serious stuff for the day, but also some entertainment for after work. One evening, a local folk group made the aperitif and dinner more lively with their music and songs; I never...

  • A tour in the village

As the days began to get longer, I had time to make a tour in the village one evening, just by curiosity; it is not a tourist spot, but you can always discover about local customs and people when you look around, taking your time; it was about religion in the previous tip. . . . Easter is prepared in many Smolenice houses, and that decorates nicely...

  • Visit the nice little church

A bit outside the village is the church of Smolenice with its onion shaped tower top; this is a rather modest church, but I liked to visit this place, not at all an architectural marvel, but you can see here how the church is integrated in the local life and customs. The décor inside is baroque (picture 2), but interesting are the paintings on the...

  • Toads are not princes. . .

Castles are usually inhabited by princes and princesses and The Smolenice Castle, with its setting on top of a forested hill could also be a Grimm brothers fairy tale castle. . . .Next to some water pond nearby, you may think of princes and frogs but here I spotted only toads, and I did not think of kissing one of them! In fact (Spring! Again!)...

  • Walk in the woods

A very nice thing one can do is walking in the woods early morning on the hills around the castle. It was Spring when I was there, and the flowers began to bring colours to the underbrush. You can spot shy deer who very quickly run under cover, as they are hunted in that area; a small pond surrounded by willows with their tender green colours...

  • Walk up the tower

Of course, when there is a tower, you may like to walk up and enjoy the views over the plain and mountains like the owners and their servants did in the past. The landscape certainly has changed during time, but it is always nice to look at things from far above.A scary thing appears too in the landscape, as you can see on the last picture: a nuke...

  • Like a prince!

A very good thing, when you are invited to a conference there is that you can stay there; I was lucky to have a big suite in the former cellar; there was no wine but hot and cold water. . . . :-( (picture 3)Living in a castle for a few days is very interesting, there are nice rooms to visit, you can enjoy the architecture, but you also walk...

There is also a bar for the needs of Chateau guest such as big hall for banquets. They are great especially if they are sponsored by big firms :) Anyway, this is a snapshot :) made in the early morning :) (it sounds better like late night) in the only one bar. :) The man was some professor from Netherlands :)
