dominik hrbaty by Skipka Maybe some of you who are interested in tennis and players noticed that also Dominik Hrbaty is one of those players who sometimes mix the ATP tops. He is the best Slovak tennis player and he proves the quality of the Slovak tennis school such as names Mecir (who even won a gold medal on Olympics), Kucera and for the women is worth to mention Hantuchova and Habsudova. MY FIRST SKIING by matcrazy1 Slovakia seems to be great country for lovers of skiing. Ski resorts are located mainly in north-central region of Zilina (historical Spis and Orava regions) in Tatra Mountains, Mala Fatra and Velka Fatra Mountains. Much more information: Slovensky Yeti - fantastic pages in Czech, English, German, Hungarian, Polish, Russian and Slovak language: ski resorts, ski conditions, accommodations, prices, weather etc. Haha, I started my skiing adventures somewhere in Slovak Tatra Mountains... long time ago as you can see on my picture. Oh, I must ask my parents where this pic was taken - I can't remember. I never went to Slovakia for skiing later (I never tried snowboarding) but my brother with his family used to go there (Tatra Mountains) almost each winter. His opinion: 1. cheaper than in Poland (although less and less), 2. better prepared skiing trails than in Poland, 3. less choice of food, restaurants and tourist facilities than in Poland, 4. less crowds (usually) than in Poland. Zuberec - I visited in summer - was good destination for skiing and snowboarding lovers as well. Some of my friends booked Penzion Timea for winter holiday. And they told that there were well prepared (better than in Poland) ski trails and lighted ski trail + ski lift cheaper than in Poland close to Penzion Timea (on walking distance).
Equipment for skiing/snowboarding was available to rent in Zuberec. Leave a Comment Theme: Skiing/Snowboarding

HORSERIDING IN ORAVSKA POLHORA by matcrazy1 I met few times people riding a horse in mountainous parts of Slovakia - in Oravska Polhora for example. As the surrounding mountains looked amazing I was sure it was great fan to ride a horse across the area. Hmm... I never did it (yet!).
BYOH - Bring Your Own Horse (like BYOB - bring your own booze/beer :-). Sorry, I don't know where to rent a horse or to take horseriding lessons there - ask the locals or at local tourist information, please. Anyway, it should be much cheaper than in any country of Western Europe. Leave a Comment

BICYCLE BY LOCAL GROCERY by matcrazy1 I noticed quite a lot of locals riding a bicycle and not exclusively for recreation esp. in the countryside. Quite many Slovaks don't have cars and used to ride a bicycle instead. There were not special, designated for bicycles trails at least in and around Zuberec but 2 of my friends rode by bicycle the highway up to hot thermal springs in nearby Oravica.
I didn't find any rent a bicycle company but I saw some cars from Poland with bicycles on roof. They were looking for mountain bicycle (off road) tracks. Leave a Comment Theme: Biking

For Westerners who are thinking of going to the High Tatras for skiing here are a couple of tips/warnings: - Some skiers (also sightseers and tobogganers) persist in the habit of walking up the pistes, rather than pay (or wait) for a ski lift; - Most resorts are not actually set out for ease of access by train (e.g. the railway station is at least half a mile below the main ski lift in Tatranská Lomnica and the Smokovec to Hrebionek funicular is likewise about 600 yards above the main railway station). If arriving early enough driving may allow you to get closer. Alternatively wear suitable footwear and carry your ski boots. - My opinion (please reply if you dispute this) is that the colour classifications in Slovakia are more challenging than elsewhere. (A blue here would be a red in Switzerland and a red would be black). However the lift facilities seem to be adequate and the prices are exceptionally good: I've just paid less than GBP 5 per day for equipment hire and a 3-day area ski-pass (including local rail travel) was GBP 36.
Reasonable equipment is available for hire (possibly less than airline baggage fees?) Note that Stary Smokovec is full of sports shops - if you want new gear why not consider buying there. Leave a Comment
