Stary Smokovec Things to Do

  • Tourist Information

There is a tourist information center right in the center of town right at the top of the cluster of buildings by the railway station. While I was there (which was pretty low season) it was staffed by fairly young people. Everyone was quite helpful and they gave out a free map with decent orientation for the hiking trails in the vicinity. They can...

  • Hiking around Stary Smokovec

Stary Smokovec was a good, central place to go if you want to hike in the high tatras. Take the funicular up to Hrebienok and go hiking up farther from there. In an afternoon's hike you can see some great waterfalls, mountains and lovely lakes. You will notice a lot of locals hiking, though it is not nearly as crowded as Poland. You will see people...

  • Railway station

This beautiful building is what you first see when you arrive by train. The ticket sale is only open around train departures (at least in pre-season). There is a timetable hanging there too. Also there is a café and a souvenir shop. The public toilets are located in a small building to the right of the station building if you stand in front of it...

Stary Smokovec Transportation

  • Bus to Lysa Polana

Particularly on weekends, make sure that you are well aware of the bus schedules if you are depending on public transport. There are two bus companies on this route. The Polish bus does cross the border, the Slovak bus does not. The Polish bus starts at the bus station in Zakopane, costs 10 zl and took about two hours from Zakopane to Stary...

If you are leaving Stary Smokovec towards Poprad on the bus you will get a beautiful view of the Tatras, have your camera ready. The bus makes plenty of stops on the way to Poprad so try to get a seat at the back of the bus if you can. If you are lucky enough to be leaving as the sun is rising you will get a magnificent, unobstructed shot of the...

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I was riding the bus to the Polish border with some Poles that were vacationing in Stary Smokovec. We got off the bus across from the border, but the Poles went into the little restaurant instead of heading for the border? Why? They mentioned that Slovak beer was very good and they were going to have a beer or two before going home. High praise from the neighbors I suppose

  • Tourist Office

There is an information center but it's not open on weekends in off-season. But in front of the building by the main road you will find area maps hanging here. A hiking summer one and a skiing winter one among them.

  • Grand Hotel

The Grand Hotel dates back to 1904. It looks rather pretty with its lovely park surrounding it. It is one of the few old buildings left.

  • Main street

Along the main street you will find cafés and restaurants as well as souvenir shops. I must admit that on a rainy day in pre-season it doesn't look too inviting.
