The cable car from Tatranska Lomnica offers a quick, though expensive, route to top of the Tatras. After arriving in Lomnica in the afternoon we decided to take the cable car up the mountains to give us a quick introduction to the Tatras before our big planned hike the following day. We spent ages looking for the entrance as our out-of-date Lonely...more

We only wanted to have a snack, so we ended up at the outside sitting area of the railway station restaurant. The service was a bit slow, ie I had to go inside to order. The place is also very popular with the locals and the menu is in English and German too.For the toilet you have to ask for a token at the buffet and go to the separate building to...more
On our last night in Lomnica we wanted to try somewhere different from our Penzion so we went looking for a restaurant in the town. For such a small town there was a reasonably good choice of places ot eat, most in or around the train station. Our first choice was the place beside the supermarket but there was a 30 minute wait here for a table. We...more
Our penzion had been recommended as a good spot to eat so we tried on our first night in Lomnica. Prices on the menu were great, Budwar was on tap and there was a lovely fire in the corner (even though it was August) which made for a very cosy atmosphere. The only problem was the quantity of the food. While my chicken breast and Ruth's pork...more
If the big ropway behind the Grand Hotel Praha is not running then you may consider taking the gondola up to Skaluate Pleso, where you can change to another ropeway which takes up on top of the mountain. Since we travelled pre-season we were not able to take this trip as the gondolas/ropeways were closed until the beginning of June for maintenance.more
If there is no train running when you want to travel you may want to check the bus timetable at the nearby bus station. We took the bus back to Poprad which cost 25 SKK compared to 30 SKK by Tatra train. The bus is very quick and part of the downhill journey from Stary Smokovec was a straight road which is quite impressive when you sit in the...more
There is a large supermarket behind the train station which is open every day from 7am to 9pm. This is a good place for assembling picnics for hiking in the Tatras. There aren't too many places in the park to buy food so it makes sense to stock up beforehand.
This very old cable car seems to be out of operation since the big storm or so. I'm talking about the one that starts behind the Grand Hotel Praha. There are new gondolas see under transportation tips.
Most visitors to Tatranska Lomnica will be planning to hike in the High Tatras. The weather can change quickly in the Tatras, especially at the higher points, where it can be very cold and it may rain frequently. My advice is to prepare yourself for all conditions. Bring rain gear and lots of layers of clothing which you can remove in warmer conditions.
Also, a good map of the Tatras is essential. You can buy a hiking map in the tourist office for 109 SKK.
There's not too much to see in Tatranska Lomnica as it's really only a base for exploring the Tatras. While we were trying to find the cable car we did see a bit of the town and passed a couple of interesting places like the church in the photo. There is also a museum of the tatras near the bus station which could be worth visiting if it's too wet...more
Tatranska Lomnica is an excellent base for hiking in the High Tatras. It's a short walk from the town to three trails - a green trail to Skalnate Pleso, a blue trail to the Studena Dolina valley above Hrebienok and a yellow trail to the east. We took the blue trail on our second day and did a 2 hour hike through the woods to the Studena Dolina. This is a fairly easy trail though there wasn't too much to see near the start. There is more information on this hike on my Vysoke Tatry page...
