belianska cave by Skipka There are 12 caves in Slovakia and it is really a must see :) In western Slovakia is just one near the Smolenice chateau called Driny, then a little one is right in the area of Bojnice chateau but for the real experience of "cave walk" you need to go eeast and visit caves in Slovensky raj and Tatry. The picture here is from Belianska cave situated in Western part of High Tatras usually called here as Belianske. There are various caves, all depends and every one is unique. However, if you are claustrophobic or so, don't try to go there. I always wonder why people scream in the cave when they turn off the light just to show to visitors how it looks like without technical progress and in the beginning of exploration :) Leave a Comment

devin by Skipka Devin is the castle (well more than ruins now but in good conditions is one of the most significant archaeological localities in Slovakia. It is a National cultural monument. Because of the advantageous geographical position, the height over the confluence of the Danube and the Morava rivers was settled as far back as the 5th century B.C. and cultural monuments from the surrounding areas overlapped here. The oldest section of the present castle dates from the 13th century; it achieved its building peak in the 15th-16th century. Napoleon's soldiery destroyed it in 1809. The Slovak movement around revolutionary years 1848-9 it was favourite place of Stur's walks. Here in 1836 the main leaders of movement ceremonially accepted the second names (such as in Russian tradition they have the name and the name of the father) of Slavic origin together. The City Museum makes use of the reconstructed basement of the Renaissance palace for exhibition purposes. Since 1965 the City Museum has carried out here a systematic archaeological research. Spissky Hrad. Romanesque palace in upper court. by hundwalder Encompassing an area of about 430,000 sq.ft., Spissky hrad was one of the largest and most important fortresses in eastern Europe. It was comissioned by Hungarian King Belo IV in 1209 AD, The castle was attacked by Islamic Tartars numerous times throughout the 13th. and 14th. centuries. Spissky was finally deserted in 1780 after being destroyed by fire. The castle is greatly weathered by the forces of nature over an 800 year period. However, unlike most of Europe's tourist popular castles, prettied up by numerous facelifts, Spissky Hrad is authentic medieval Europe. Leave a Comment Address: 3 km. southeast of Spisske Podhradie.Directions: Eastern Slovakia, between Poprad and Kosice. From the city of Spisske Podhradie, the castle can be reached by a public bus that unfortunately, makes infrequent departures. Other options include bicycle and shoe leather.

Wooden house in Bardejovske Kupele by Juditta The medieval town of Bardejov has also given its name to nearby spa. Bardejovske Kupele lies amid a coniferious forest on the southern flank of the Low Beskydy mountains. The curative properties of its mineral waters and the therapeutic effects of the climate contribute to the treatment of disorders of the digestive system and non-specific respiratory disorders. The beneficial properties of Bardejov's waters were known as early as the 13th century, although the first written mention of the spa dates only from the beginning of the 16th century. The centre of the spa is formed by its eight springs of water with a high mineral content whose quality makes it one of the most significant waters of its kind. The extensive park and the spa alleys, along with the nearby open-air museum of folk architecture and the abundance of medieval buildings in the surrounding area, offer a wide range of leisure and sightseeing activities. The enchanting architecture of the former royal town of Bardejov is not be missed. The historic core is an urban heritage reserve for the conservation of which Bardejov was awarded a European gold medal in 1986. The main square, with its late Gothic town houses refashioned in the Renaissance, is the prime tourist attraction. In the square itself stands the oldest town hall in Slovakia. It is now the seat of the Saris museum. The interior of the cathedral of the St.Giles, which dates from 1415, boasts eleven original Gothic altars. Fine mom and pop pension by hundwalder I was pleased to call this wonderful town in the Tatra mountains my home for 3 days. It is filled with great lodging and dining options. Excellent skiing and hiking options. Even a beautiful little mountain church to worship in. Or you can worship in God's great natural cathedrals; the mountains themselves. Leave a Comment Directions: From Poprad train station there are two options. Take the old standard train directly to Tatranska Lomnica. Or a more scenic option is to take the escalator to the upper platform and catch the modern Tatra express train to Stary Smokovec.

by SanguiniA From the village of Tatranska Lomnica one can catch a cable car to the top of the High Tatras. This is really a must-see for every visitor to the High Tatras. The same cable car is actually used by skiers to get to the steepest and best slopes. Leave a Comment Address: Tatranska Lomnica - High Tatras

Kezmarok city hall and central square by hundwalder The Baroque clock tower of Kezmarok's city hall looms high above the fascinating and tidy town square. The city hall was originally built about 500 years ago, and received most of its present appearance about 300 years ago during the high Baroque era. With the exception of the upper part of the tower the architecture of the building is simple but pleasing. The octagonal domed roof is typical for the region and period. The capital of the tower is especially interesting. Note the area in front of the building surrounded by the guard rails. Below the ground level are the sparkling clean public restrooms. Leave a Comment Address: Very center of old town Kezmarok.Directions: Kezmarok is located about 15 km. northeast of Poprad. Buses bound for Kezmarok leave the Poprad bus station about every hour, and are very inexpensive.

Strbske Pleso by SanguiniA This is the largest and most beautiful lake in the High Tatras. There are a lot of things to do here, skiing, walking or having a drink in the nearby cafes. There are also some souvenir shops and shops which sell skiing and hiking equipment at very reasonable prices. Leave a Comment Address: High Tatras
