The Former Town Hall Building

by monica71

This building was constructed in 1779. In the mid-1920's the municipal authority vacated the building and set up the city library in 1928. After 1989 it was renamed after the former Mayor of the City and poet Jan Bocatius. It functioned as the library until 1996, when the city authority decided to re-occupy the building. You can easily spot the building since the Tourist Information Center is also located there.

District House

by monica71

The building was constructed in 1779 J.Langer for the needs of the Abov shire council. In1888-1889 the front of the building was reconstructed after designs by G.Marko.It continued to serve as shire hall until 1928. For several weeks starting in April 1945 it was used by the Government of the Czechoslovak Republic. It is a very nice building and I liked the iron balcony, in particular. You really can not miss the building. It will catch your attention when exploring the downtown area.

The Immaculata

by monica71

The Immaculata Statue commemorates the plague from the years 1710 -1711. It was built from 1720 - 1723 and it is 14m tall. The base was designed by Tomas Tornayosi and the sculpture by Griming. The statues on the pillars of the fence were made by Hild of Sopron. On the top pf the column is a sculpture of Virgin Mary and the base has sculptures of Joseph, Sebastian and Ladislav. On the pillars of the fence there are sculptures of St Gabriel, St Elizabeth of Hungary, St Margita, St Michael and St Barbora.

St Michael Chapel

by monica71

St Michael Chapel is the second oldest building in Kosice and it was built in the 14th century. The chapel is located right by the St Elizabeth Cathedral. It is a very nice chapel and it is worth a stop. It is pretty dark inside if the light is off, but even then you can still appreciate the beauty of it. There are no signs that photos are not allowed inside, therefore I had no idea and I took one picture. I got yelled at and rushed out of the chapel by the person who was cleaning the inside after I took a picture. Even though this was a very unpleasant encounter, I still enjoyed my quick stop inside the chapel and I highly recommend a quick stop inside.

The State Theater

by monica71

The State Theater was built between 1887-1889. It is a very impressive building outside and inside. I was fortunate enough to find last minute tickets to "The Barber from Seville" opera while I was in town and took advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a performance while also seeing the building from the inside. The cupola from the main hall is decorated with images from Shakespeare's plays while the ceiling paintings are the work of Peregrin Gastbeg from Vienna. I highly recommend getting tickets to a performance when you are in town. You will enjoy the performance and being inside the theater. Plus the ticket prices are incredibly low! The prices range from 3,50 Euros to 8 Euros. Unfortunately since I got my ticket last minute, I had to be happy with a gallery seat. Everything else was sold out.

Urban Tower

by monica71

Urban Tower is the second oldest building in the city. It is located right by St Elizabeth Cathedral, downtown. The tower was built at the half of the 14th century. Inside the Urban Tower is the Wax Museum. You pay the admission fee inside the cathedral also. It makes for a nice visit on a rainy afternoon or on a day you just want to take it easy. I could not take any pictures inside the museum, though. The bell in front of the tower is the original one and it dates back to 1557.

St Elizabeth's Cathedral: North Tower

by monica71

The North Tower of the cathedral is the most decorated of all towers. It provides good views of the city on a nice and sunny day. The admission to the tower costs 1 Euro and you pay the fee inside the cathedral. You have to climb 150 steps (in a very narrow and dark spiral design), but you will be rewarded with nice views when you get to the top. If you are claustrophobic it is better to avoid climbing the tower.

St Elizabeth's Cathedral

by monica71

The cathedral is amazing! Some people say it is ranked on the first 3 most important buildings (from an architectural standpoint) in Slovakia. The construction of the cathedral started in 1380 and completed the way we see it today in 1508. It took a very long time to build it and the construction took place in several stages. However, it has never been completed according to the original plan. The original plan shows a 5-nave basilica, a 5-nave church with a cross-nave. The North tower of the cathedral is by far the most impressive one. You can climb on the tower for a small admission fee and get an excellent view of the city. Photos are not allowed inside the cathedral, but the interior is very nice. It is kind of dark if the light are off, but you will still be able to enjoy it.

Town Coat of Arms

by monica71

As I mentioned before, Kosice was the first European city to receive a coat of arms that was also certified by a coat of arms charter. King Ludwig of Anjou gave the town this coat of arms on May 7, 1369. Since 1995 the town celebrates Kosice Day the first week of May. The coat of arms and the signet are the most important symbols of the city.

Hlavna Street

by monica71

This is the main street downtown Kosice. It is breathtaking and even though it is not a very long street, it will take you a while to absorb everything that this street has to offer. The architecture of the builds is just amazing and if you are like me, you will have a blast picking up a guide book from the Tourist Information center and trying to identify every building mentioned in the guidebook. One tip that my colleagues gave me: when you walk the street don't forget to check out the roofs of the buildings too. You will be amazed at how many interesting architectural details you will discover. I was in town at the time the Soccer World Cup was going on. There was a big stage in the main town square, with a huge screen where they would broadcast all the games live. The atmosphere was fantastic! I was being reminded once again that people in Europe really know how to party and how to...
