Aquaparks in Liptow

by 68maciek

I think that Liptovsky Mikulas tourist information is very kind and helpful. Once I wrote to them an e-mail (probably even in English, which is a bit strange in case of communication between Poles and Slovaks due to the languages similarity). I have received a very profesional and friendly answer. They gave me a very helpful list for my daughter's class/school potential tour accommodation and many other advice. I believe that 10 EUR (perhaps 8 EUR if you are lucky but this depends on season and loction as well) per person is a reasonable price in Slovakia for fair conditions (whatever reasonable and fair mean-hahaha).Just contact them (if you have problems with the address I will find it). Don't give up Tatralandia idea mainly for childern. You can also stay in any Liptovsky Mikulas hostel or turisticka ubytovnia or camping. It should be pretty well communicated by public buses with...

Slovakia very general overview

by 68maciek

I like to add to Evaanna that:Tatry (Nizke, Vysoke, Zapadne, Chocske Verchy) area:You can enjoy some valleys and routes to mountian huts and few cable cars (also for hikers in winter in Liptov area (including Tatry).Mind also Oravsky Hrad, few open air museums including Vlkolinec, Martin,Brestova, Prybylina, Stara Lubovla,Vychylovka, Oblazy water mill. There are few caves.Spis region has also few historical tiny towns (Bardejov,Levoca and others) and Spisky Hrad.Eastern Slovakia is well known for wooden ortodox churches, few open air museums (Svidnik Humenne), Krasna Horka castle Betliar palace and Kosice and caves.I have to visit Banska Stiavnica, Bojnice and Bratislava one day in southern Slovakia.

Slovak National Gallery

by csordila

Housed in two historic buildings along the river Danube, the Gallery is the best collection of Slovak art in the city. You can see exhibits on applied arts, naive/folk arts and crafts, and medieval ecclesiastical statues and carvings, especially carved altar panels by the famous Gothic artist, Master Pál Lõcsei; also paintings by 19th c. expressionist painter László Mednyánszky, one of Central Europe’s most important artists who was living in Budapest where he worked. Also the painting of the expressionist painter Martin Benka titled "Into the Field" may be admired which represented Slovakia on the art exhibition "The masterpieces of European art" on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome.,

Bratislava's historical old town

by csordila

The city was the capital of Hungary from 1526 to 1867, the Hungarian Holy Crown was protected here, the Hungarian Kings were crowned here. The castle standing on the mountain defines the city's panorama. In the 16th century Ferdinand Habsburg has reconstructed it in renaissance style, while in the next century the hungarian Family Pálffy in baroque style. It burnt down in 1811 after Napoleon occupied. The present reconstruction was completed in 1968. Bratislava's most beautiful part is the old and cosy downtown lying under the castle. Here can be seen the St. Martin coronation cathedral (Szent Márton Koronázó templom), on the roof of which there is a representation of the Hungarian Holy Crown. Church of St. Elisabeth, a masterpiece of Ödön Lechner, the so called Blue Church decorated by stylized hungarian folk art elements is a very interesting evidence of the hungarian art nouveau...

Slovakian capital city: Bratislava

by Rupanworld

Bratislava is the capital city of Slovakia and is a beautiful small city. I loved walking down the old town, seeing the churches, the amazing creative statues all around, the Danube river cruises,.... everything about the city is so beautiful. Here are some pictures from the city that I would like to share here. Please go to my Bratislava page for more information.

Slovak pride: River Danube

by Rupanworld

Well a river might not be a thing to see. But for river Danube, I guess there might be a difference. This one river passes through many important cities and hence, I guess, it might be something worth seeing. The Danube river flows through ten countries, viz., Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. It passes through important cities and many country capitals like Vienna (Austria), Bratislava (Slovakia), Budapest (Hungary) and Belgrade (Serbia). Therefore it plays an important role in trade and tourism. It is known by various names in various languages across europe such as in Bulgarian, Croatian and Serbian as Dunav, Czech, Polish and Slovak as Dunaj, in German as Donau, Hungarian as Duna, Italian as Danubio, Slovenian as Donava, in Romanian as Dunãre, in Russian and Ukrainian as Dunay, in Latin as Danubius, Greek as Istros, Turkish...

Slovak President's residence: Grassalkovic Palace

by Rupanworld

The Grassalkovich palace was built as the summer residence of Count Anton Grasalkovic in the 1760s near the city walls of Bratislava. A decade later much modifications and extensions were made to it. The palace was frequently visited by the Empress Maria Theresa. Today it is the seat of the President of Slovakia. It had a huge garden behind it, which has now been converted into a public park. The garden is really beautiful, but entrance to it closes at around 4.30 PM and I was late by 1 minute and could not go in. That's a pity. I wish I could. It is so beautiful.

Slovak National Theatre

by Rupanworld

It is the oldest Slovak professional theatre. It has 3 sections, viz., drama, opera and ballet. It was founded in 1920 right after the creation of Czechoslovakia and was taken over by the state in 1945. Initially there was a fourth section, viz., the music section. The Slovak National Theatre is an impressive building, just in the old town of Bratislava and it is not possible to miss it if you are in the old town. The place is heavily crowded with tourist, every hour of the day.

Slovakian Parliament

by Rupanworld

Right opposite to the Bratislava castle in Bratislava, there is quite an imposing building and it is the Slovakian Parliament. It's a very nice building and worth taking a photo. There are some dome shaped glasses on the floor outside from where you can see some books and stationeries lying on a table inside. Don't really know what it means. May be just one of those working rooms inside the parliament.

Beckov Castle Ruins - on the way to Trencin

by scm73

On the drive to Trencin you pass by some fantastic ruins perched on a rocky outcrop. You do have to plan how to get there beforehand as there are no nearby exits on the highway that will allow you to get off and visit. In all it is only about a 20 minute detour and well worth it.We visited in winter but the ruins are open from around March to October.
